I believe that
1) Only US citizens should be allowed to have firearms. No Green Card holders,no holders of temporary visas, and NO WETBACKS!
2) People with certain medical conditions should be denied firearms at least temporarily...if not permanently.
2) People who have been convicted of certain crimes, certain types of crimes, should be denied firearms for life.
Yes,I know that the left could try to unfairly diagnose...or criminally charge...people with the hope of eroding the 2nd Amendment.
Item #3 is a non-starter unless it is negotiated as part of a plea deal. Anyone who is legally allowed to vote should be entitled to own a firearm ... and I do believe that convicted felons should be allowed to vote after they are no longer under sentence for their crimes.
OK, this one I am kind of torn on. If someone commits a crime and does prison time (no parole, no time off, etc) and fulfills their debt to society, I see no reason that their rights should not be fully reinstated. Now, if the crime was so heinous, or the person is so morally bankrupt that they have proven they are still a threat, we need to ask why wasn't capital punishment applied or why is this person being allowed out of prison to begin with?
Disagree on the basis of there being no provision for who makes these judgements.
One could make the case that police officers and former military shouldn’t own guns - PTSD.
No way. I like ‘shall not infringe’ just fine, thank you.
Those certain types of crimes should only be violent crime, such as murder, attempted murder, rape, kidnapping etc using a firearm while doing so.
OTOH, if capital punishment for certain crimes were reinstituted, then there wouldn’t be such a need for restricting gun rights for others.
The problem with any or all of your “ reasonable” restrictions is who gets to decide.
Of course, the med folks, the state, the neighbor down the street will always decide for the control of others.
Hence, the right to life liberty and pursuit of happiness is the operative principle behind all other rights.
Don’t tread on me, and you won’t be tread upon.
Item #1. So I can’t bring my firearms when I come down for a shooting competition? Or do I have to borrow someone else’s?
Yeah, that’s not going to work very well. Target shooters have their equipment custom fit and tuned to their specific needs, and a borrowed pistol or rifle just isn’t the same.
Or are we going to make the process even more onerous for folks? It’s not like it’s an easy process to come across the border with this stuff in the first place, and you are proposing making it utterly impossible.
