Item #1. So I can’t bring my firearms when I come down for a shooting competition? Or do I have to borrow someone else’s?
Yeah, that’s not going to work very well. Target shooters have their equipment custom fit and tuned to their specific needs, and a borrowed pistol or rifle just isn’t the same.
Or are we going to make the process even more onerous for folks? It’s not like it’s an easy process to come across the border with this stuff in the first place, and you are proposing making it utterly impossible.
About 10 years ago I attempted to drive my personal vehicle into Canada via the border station just north of I-29 (North Dakota to Manitoba). Having already crossed more international borders than I can count (take a quick peek at my profile page and you'll see) I expected no trouble.I was wrong.They sent me to "secondary" where they proceeded to demand the password to my laptop while they pulled apart my car.They proceeded to ask me a million questions about firearms as they were disassembling my car.
Long story short: after about 2 hours at "secondary" I was allowed to enter.Mind you,they were never loud,rude or abusive but they also made it clear that they had something on their mind. Since then I've entered Canada several times with no trouble at all. I have a very common "American" name and all I can think of is that a guy with my name was on some kind of "watch list".
I'd be willing to bet that you're a damn fine guy who can be fully trusted with a nuclear missile,let alone an AR-15. But if we make exceptions than everyone will demand one.And if Canada were to enact a similar law that,too,would be reasonable and understandable.
