THE NATIONAL TROUBLES: The Government Showing Some Signs of Life; THE DISUNION MOVEMENT; Editorial: The Resurrection of the Government-The First Step Towards Peace (1/3/1861)
New York Times archives – Times Machine ^ | 1/3/1861

WASHINGTON, Wednesday, Jan. 2.

We have a Government at last. High authority announces that the policy of the Administration, towards the Secessionists, is entirely changed. Henceforth it will be concillatory but firm in the execution of the laws.

The steam frigate Brooklyn and another vessel at Norfolk were yesterday ordered to be in readiness for immediate departure to Charleston.

The Brooklyn's cruise is up, and her crew are waiting to be paid off and discharged. But the emergency is considered too pressing to admit it.

The secession leaders discovered yesterday the intention to start these vessels, and notified their sympathizers at Norfolk to have minute-men ready to seize them if they attempted to go to sea. The Administration is on the watch to prevent it.

Secretary-of-War HOLT has appointed Capt. CHARLES STONE, on recommendation of Gen. SCOTT, to be Inspector-General of Militia in the District of Columbia. To him is intrusted the important duty of immediately organizing the District Militia, to repel invasion, suppress insurrection and preserve public property.

STONE's commission will be issued by the President to-day.

Rumor gains credence that all important Southern posts will be immediately reinforced by troops.

Mr. BUCHANAN, having shaken off the traitors, henceforth will be sound. Let him experience immediately, then, that he has the support of all Union men so long as he upholds the flag of the country.

The evidences of a purpose on the part of the Secessionists to seize upon the public property here, and usurp the Government at its Capital, have become so clear that energetic measures are taking to defeat their plans, and repress the treason.

“Then call us Rebels if you will we glory in the name...”

A very good read about the Confederate navy is ‘Glory in the Name’ by James Douglas and it’s sequel. He has written other books about seafaring, also.

Interesting reprinting on page 6 of editorial in the Times of London (hard to read, though). It starts off very snide and condescending towards Americans, but ends up articulating what many thought and feared at the time about the dangers of the country collapsing. Opinions changed week to week, even day by day, back then, so they may not always be so worried about the state of our union.

Those who do not learn from history...you know that thing.

To destroy a people, you must first sever their roots. - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

You must understand, the leading Bolsheviks who took over Russia were not Russians. They hated Russians. They hated Christians. Driven by ethnic hatred they tortured and slaughtered millions of Russians without a shred of human remorse. It cannot be overstated. Bolshevism committed the greatest human slaughter of all time. The fact that most of the world is ignorant and uncaring about this enormous crime is proof that the global media is in the hands of the perpetrators. - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Morning Professor.

Interesting, the NYT disclosing military secrets back then too. (Ship movements).

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

January 6, 2021 may prove to be a pivotal time in history.

“Interesting reprinting on page 6 of editorial in the Times of London (hard to read, though).”

Thanks for pointing it out, X. Here is a direct link, though the Times Machine robot transcriber sometimes makes mistakes when the copy is rough.

Thanks for the link!
It is easy to read and copy: Seems to me, if we just change the word "slavery" to any or all of, "woke", "progressive", "politically correct", "Big Tech control" or even "Democrats". we have a pretty good description of the political descendants of 1860 secessionists.

Let me know if you would like links to any of the articles you see. Say what you will about the NYT, their archives are quite accessible.

Captain Charles Stone. Later to be railroaded as the scapegoat for the Ball’s Bluff disaster and a warning shot at McClellan. A shameful affair.

Helen Viola Jackson died last month at the age of 101. She was the last known widow of a Civil War veteran. At 17, in 1936, she married James Bolin, the 93 year old veteran she was caring for. He couldn't pay her, but she inherited his pension. Such marriages were not unknown in the South, but Bolin was a Union veteran from Missouri. Bolin died three years later, but Jackson didn't make the marriage public or apply for his pension. She was afraid for her reputation and didn't want his children to resent her.

The only thing that has stopped concerning The Civil War is the shooting. And I’m sometimes not sure if that can be said. Rest In Peace Mrs. Jackson.

Say ‘’x’’, sometime Google US Army Surgeons Manual/William C. Grace. That’s my great great grandfather. He wrote that.

Dateline Washington January 6, 2081

Historians believe that this day, sixty years ago was the initial spark that ignited the Second American revolutionary war. The obvious theft of an election through the use of Dominion voting machines, illegal mail in ballots and many other voter “irregularities,” that all could see. The Capital in DC was captured and occupied...

Nancy Pelosi was accidentally shot twice in the back of the head. The coroner ruled it a suicide.

Gettysburg has been captured as well as Baltimore. The “Hammer and Anvil” is about to go into operation. The District is next.

Casualties and collateral damage are not a consideration.

Do your duty gentlemen.

For posterity...
