Weekly Garden Thread - January 2-8, 2021
January 2, 2021 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 01/02/2021 6:43:19 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Scored some MG garden soil 2 cu ft. for 1.50 today. How’s that for a 2021 start?

That is an excellent price! I know I paid about $5 when I bought some of that size toward the end of the season.

SCORE!

My gardening dreams always start with how to heat the future greenhouse without breaking the bank. Then i go back to sleep.

This spring, I will be repositioning and repurposing the old quonset frame for our first, serious greenhouse. Long term, I want to build a rocket stove with a “bench mass” along the north wall of the frame. Lots of cleaning/trash disposal.

But, with the RV site cleared and the things store, we can start the spring gardening, with hydroponics in the basement.

Psychotria Elata, or Hooker's Lips (or Hot Lips), evolved, so they say, to attract pollenators

Probably not news on a gardening thread! My computer and FR's don't seem to be on speaking terms lately, so this is just a test run for a few other pics that may be of interest this week.

Surprisingly,. my garden has made a reappearance from our almost 4 feet of snow. The warm temperatures and rain we got over Christmas has done away with the majority of it.

Have almost all of my seeds. Bought more steel rods to construct 10 trellises in all. They work like a dream for peas, beans cucumbers. I throw a net over it so everything can cling. They save a lot of space.

Am going to try a trellis for a kind of winter squash called Honeynut. These are small butternut type...serves 1 or 2. Even sweeter than butternut.

In a couple months, the daffodils will begin to emerge. Excited!! First time we planted them in our little community garden.

Thanks for the ping. We had lots of ice-cycles melting yesterday. Today is colder and lots of ice on the trees.

The Garden/workshop/storage Shed now has 4 walls and a floor on top of the basement/root cellar. Next week the roof, sub-floor, and maybe doors and windows.

Several seed catalogs are here. We bought so many extra last year, that we will not need near as many this year.

‘Honeynut’ is an excellent choice. Love that squash! Good choice for a trellis.

“We bought so many extra last year, that we will not need near as many this year.”

I’m up to thirteen seed catalogs - I’ve bought most of what I NEED, now a few from each for things I WANT. ;)

My garden task of the day is to dig out some Kale that I need for a soup later in the week. Beau shoveled paths for me to the feeders and the compost bin and the greenhouse...and I only had to ask once, LOL!

I have several pictures of those rocket stove with bench mass that I printed out a few years back. They always looked like a good idea to me.

Since hubby doubled the size of our “shed” without consulting me, the cost over-run will take most of the money that I had set aside for a garden room to be added outside the dining room patio door area-so that dream will never happen.

To compensate, additional large windows were put on the back of the shed which faces southwest—slightly more south. So it can be partitioned off and insulated for growing plants if we actually need to in the winter. Might even install a soap stone stove or something for heat-we have wood from 20 trees that were sacrificed for the shed.

I have our little sunroom off the basement patio that helps extend the season, and makes wonderful sunny heat when the sun shines in the winter time.

Hubby has purchased Cattle panel type wire and made them into hoops large enough to walk under. He plants pole beans there and it makes for an easy way of picking them.

Hey that’s pretty good/quick help! We always get so much more than we need cause we WANT. Ha.

What sort of soup are you making with the Kale. I need to try and find something I like with kale, because I think it would be a good addition to our garden.

We here in the Seattle area have still not had a hard frost.

My sweet peas are still blossoming although since I tried to get them I. Very late I only got a few peas off them before the nights got down to the low 30s.

I get flowers but they bear no fruit.

I am refusing to whack em down since these are the only flowers going right now...hahah.

If we don’t get a hard frost soon I think my camelia bush will start blossoming in about a month only to see then frozen off at the stem when the hard frost does come.

I’ve seen the hoops. It’s a great idea....Fell in love with these upside down “V” shaped trellises. I plant lettuce and spinach underneath.

2020 had to take one last shot at us. The year ended here in Central Missouri with ~3/8” of ice deposited on everything. It will take me two solid days to clean up all of the busted tree limbs around the yard.

Nothing going on in the garden. We had intended to pick a mess of greens to have with our black-eye peas yesterday, but nobody volunteered to go out in the freezing rain to pick some. lol

Had a houseful of kids and grandkids the past two days. Hadn’t seen the grands since July. It was nice to have them here, and now it’s nice to be back to peace and quiet. Four screaming little monkeys stuck indoors are hard on old guy’s blood pressure.
