Elderly woman fatally mauled by her five Czechoslovakian wolfdogs

A controversy over the safety of owning Czechoslovakian wolfdogs is afoot following the fatal mauling of a 74-year-old Italian woman, who was reportedly killed by her five dogs.

Mariangela Zaffino’s body was found by her daughter in the northern Italy apartment where the pair lived with their handful of canines, according to the Telegraph.

The victim’s daughter and local authorities said the five wolfdogs — named Ares, Aylen, Artù, Aragorn and Apache — had not showed signs of aggression prior to Zaffino’s death. What prompted the attack is unclear, though the animals have been removed from the home by law enforcement. The fate of the dogs hasn’t been decided.

Neighbors had reportedly questioned the wisdom of keeping the roughly 50-pound dogs in a small apartment. Czechoslovakian wolfdogs are a mix between Alsatians and Carpathian wolves. Known in Slovaki as Ceskoslovensky Vlciak, they were first bred to be used as guard dogs in the 1950s and require a great deal of exercise. They’re also said to be highly intelligent, but difficult to train.

Fabrizio Rondalino reportedly told the newspaper Corriere della Sera that he spent 18-months caring for a wolfdog and doesn’t think they should exist — let alone be kept as pets.

“It is a man-made invention,” Rondalino said. “One of the worst breeds created.”

According to Rondalino, the dogs have a “highly developed predatory instinct” and should be sterilized and phased out of existence. He gave his dog to a friend who is a professional animal trainer.

Never mind, this guy:

““It is a man-made invention,” Rondalino said. “One of the worst breeds created.””

Name me one dog breed that is NOT a “man made invention”

“Look at that pack of majestic wild Pugs” said no one, ever.

My last dog didn’t know her name when I got her at 6 months. Yelled at her a couple of times when she was playing, then grabbed her collar, dragged her in the house, and closed the door. Ten minutes passed, and we tried it again. After three time-outs, she knew her name. Then I had to break her of smoking weed and cigarettes.

I thought there was a point with dogs where if enough of them were together, the pack instinct overrode any other loyalty or amicability to the owner that each might have individually.

I had forgotten that. I guess I just was remembering
back when I first heard about them and no one knew
what they really were.

Tippi Hedren - beautiful woman and lover/keeper of wild animals.
I forgot she was the mother of Melanie Griffith...who was great in “Pacific Heights” and “Nobody’s Fool” with Paul Newman.. Her mother was an ok actress but Melanie was better.

Dobies...yes - same here. BUT ours did not like CATS...

Years ago we had a friend come over who thought he had to be cautious of coming into the house with our Doberman there.

He sat at our kitchen table drinking coffee and visiting and our Doberman crawled under the table where he could snuggle up and make sure the friend could reach him to pet him. He had an Afghan Wolfhound and didn’t think he’d cotton to a different breed. He was pretty surprised, I guess to make it out of the house with all limbs intact.

I think the dogs in Italy were tired of being cooped up with COVID 19 regs. I wonder how much exercise they got. Beautiful breed of animal...
