A controversy over the safety of owning Czechoslovakian wolfdogs is afoot following the fatal mauling of a 74-year-old Italian woman, who was reportedly killed by her five dogs.
Mariangela Zaffino’s body was found by her daughter in the northern Italy apartment where the pair lived with their handful of canines, according to the Telegraph.
The victim’s daughter and local authorities said the five wolfdogs — named Ares, Aylen, Artù, Aragorn and Apache — had not showed signs of aggression prior to Zaffino’s death. What prompted the attack is unclear, though the animals have been removed from the home by law enforcement. The fate of the dogs hasn’t been decided.
Neighbors had reportedly questioned the wisdom of keeping the roughly 50-pound dogs in a small apartment. Czechoslovakian wolfdogs are a mix between Alsatians and Carpathian wolves. Known in Slovaki as Ceskoslovensky Vlciak, they were first bred to be used as guard dogs in the 1950s and require a great deal of exercise. They’re also said to be highly intelligent, but difficult to train.
Fabrizio Rondalino reportedly told the newspaper Corriere della Sera that he spent 18-months caring for a wolfdog and doesn’t think they should exist — let alone be kept as pets.
“It is a man-made invention,” Rondalino said. “One of the worst breeds created.”
According to Rondalino, the dogs have a “highly developed predatory instinct” and should be sterilized and phased out of existence. He gave his dog to a friend who is a professional animal trainer.

Disaster waiting to happen.
If she was renting the apartment it is hard to believe she was approved to have that many dogs!!! but it’s not run by my HOA it’s Italy!!!
Five of those Wolf-Dogs in an Apartment was not logical.
Whoever consented to it shares the blame for the outcome.
Of course, she may have just brought them in without getting approval. Some people enjoy keeping a close proximity to imminent danger, but usually they would own Pit Bulls, not Wolf-Dog hybrids.
Back in the 60’s, actress Tiffany Hedren, mother of Melanie Griffith, grandmother of Dakota Johnson, lived with full grown Lions and Tigers in her home.
Melanie remembers swimming in the family pool with a grown make lion.
I’m glad when this happens to the owner instead of an innocent.
Did she taste like chicken to them?
They were five Wild & Crazy Dogs.
I don't care. I want one.
Sadly, the near inevitable outcome of keeping a pack of German Shepherd/Carpathian Wolf mix dogs in a small apartment should not have required any mystic seer to portend.
Beautiful! But, yeah, if you are a 74-year old woman, it may not be the best idea in the world to suddenly take in five of the things!
You think?
a mix between Alsatians and Carpathian wolves.
What could go wrong??
The only thing missing would be to breed one with a
Tasmanian Devil.
Look up the movie ROAR.
These people were crazy.
I blame the woman. These dogs are precious.
Czechoslovakia has existed for 30 years.
50 lbs?
You’d need 3 of them to equal my dear departed King Shepard. He was 150 lbs when displasia and cancer got him.
weird ey color difference
One would most likely be manageable. Five, with a 74 year old woman playing alpha, and cooped up in an apartment? No.
Reading up on the breed... They are no worse than regular GSD’s...
