A DCN review of scientific literature and anecdotal advice from scholars of taste and smell shows dozens of examples of coffee being used as the barometer for a kind of sniff-test for COVID-19, in part for its distinct smell and also for its availability in homes throughout the world.
The CDC now lists the loss of smell, known as anosmia, as one of the most common symptoms of COVID-19, with most recent studies indicating that about 50% to as much as 80% of people testing positive for the virus have suffered from anosmia.

Smelling the coffee brewing was one way I knew I was coming back from the Rona.
You should make bacon too.
Wake up and...
I'm 77 and in excellent health so far. No meds.
Just had cataract surgery. Lucky to live in these times. Amazing.
My farts don’t smell.
“No meds” — that is amazing and impressive!
I drink about five cups of coffee a day. I learned back in May that coffee is one of the things that opens up the cell walls to allow zinc in to fight viruses. This may be why I don’t catch colds very often. I do consider it something I use to fight off any serious bout of cv19. So far so good.
We must be kin.
I never lost my sense of taste or smell with my Rona. I did consider coffee an important adjunct to my therapeutic regimen of Diet Coke and Tylenol.
Oh no! You’ve got the ‘rona for sure.
It’s a shame it doesn’t supply immunity.;
I’d never be sick again.
I found I had anosmia with COVID when I couldn’t smell the coffee pot one morning. A week later I could and it smelled wonderful!

“My farts don’t smell.”
That’s what you think! You can clear a room like that.
That makes sense.
Given that Trump has done the heavy lifting, it should be branded a “Covfefe-19 Test”
Between 50-80% of patients? Nice to see they have developed a rock solid understanding of this after shutting down the world over it.
Thanks posting this.
A year ago, when I probably had the Rona, I basically lost my sense of smell and taste.
We have an auto timed combo coffee grinder and brewer. It goes off 5:25 am every morning. My wife, 5 minutes later could smell the coffee aroma and I never did for a couple of months post Rona. A couple of months ago, I started smelling and tasting the coffee again.
I usually have a wine glass of Sangria with my dinner. Only recently has that great aroma/taste returned for me.
My normal body temp was/is 98. During the event, last year.
My temp was a mild 99 for about the first week. Since, then, my, so called normal has been 97 with cold feet/hands off and on during the day and a hot flash after being in bed at night for about 30-45 minutes. I have never had cold hands/feet before, unless I was outside in the cold.
It seems that some of my autonomic neural pathways had some temporary negative impacts with the Rona.
Glad you’re healthy. Blessings!
