Weekly Garden Thread - December 12-18, 2020
December 12, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 12/12/2020 7:15:19 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

“I haven’t felt this way since JFK was killed.”

That is the best description I have heard of this evil, awful, lawless situation...and I was only four years old when that happened!

Looks like Magnum Carrot is still available through Stokes Seed, but you have to order out of Canada, and I’m not sure what the rules are, or if they’ll ship to US addresses:

These are the carrot varieties at Stokes Seed, America, but it looks like you have to buy in rather large quantities:

My late fall lettuce growing in the unheated greenhouse is deemed a SUCCESS! I harvested these this morning, and there is still more out there that looks to be viable, even though we are getting temps in the teens at night, now. Remember, these are in the (unheated) greenhouse and also have another cover over them as well. Varieties were all cold-hardy and were all from Johnny's. Salanova Red Butter, Alkindus, Adriana and Five-Star Greenhouse Mix. Very happy with the results!

Thanks, that’s where I got the magnums from years back. Then they didn’t have any for several years. Stokes got them from FRance. I’ll have to get in touch with them.

I wish I knew how to post pictures.

I have two Meyer Lemon trees filled with fruit. They are so sweet and a cross between a lemon and a Mandarin orange.

They are great to add to water or tea.

Nice pics! I use lemons mostly for iced tea and there is also a tea I like to add an orange too. I bet these would be perfect. I use postimages.org to post pictures. Easy and free

In addition to seed catalogs arriving earlier than I remember, hatcheries also seem to be getting an early start to the season. I got an ad from Meyer Hatchery saying they’re taking orders for 2021. I don’t remember seeing ads like that earlier than February in past years.

Probably planning ahead and ramping up production if they’re smart.

I’ve always used Murray McMurray out of Iowa and they are offering free shipping. I’ve noticed they ship year-round now and not just in the spring.

I came across a yeast bread recipe in which an adjustable heating pad
is used underneath the bowl in the dough rising stage.

Wonder if the heating pad trick could be used for starting seedlings before planting season?

There are heating pads made solely for that purpose: https://www.jungseed.com/category/1047

I use a heating pad like that every year under my seedlings. Michigan plus tile floor just too chilly.

A very standard practice for seedlings. They like bottom heat.

‘Back in the day’ the top of the fridge was THE place to start your seedlings, LOL! Now Mother Government RUINED it all by making everything more energy efficient! ;)

(Which, in reality, I am all for. LOVE spending less on electricity and natural gas, thanks!)
