Astronomy Picture of the Day - Mammatus Clouds over Mount Rushmore

Explanation: What's that below those strange clouds? Presidents. If you look closely, you may recognize the heads of four former US Presidents carved into famous Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, USA. More obvious in the featured image are the unusual mammatus clouds that passed briefly overhead. Both were captured together by a surprised tourist with a quick camera in early September. Unlike normal flat-bottomed clouds which form when moist and calm air plateaus rise and cool, bumpy mammatus clouds form as icy and turbulent air pockets sink and heat up. Such turbulent air is frequently accompanied by a thunderstorm. Each mammatus lobe spans about one kilometer. The greater mountain is known to native Lakota Sioux as Six Grandfathers, deities responsible for the directions north, south, east, west, up, and down.

OK, since you went there. I have some alfalfa fed mule deer back strap from Eastern Oregon and some coastal mountain black tail deer back strap.

The alfalfa fed is so much better.

Yes mammatus clouds were named by a male, probably a sailor.

Of course!

We see melons stacked in a grocery store, and if we look too long at them...magical things begin to happen in our brains and we don’t see melons any more...

It lasts until someone runs into our idle ankles with a shopping cart and a sharp look...:)

The 2nd one might be at least partly photoshop.
Just guessing on that.

You may be right, but I’ve seen some over on the east coast of Florida on summer afternoons that make me think it could be real!

The mammatus though- those are incredible. Not familiar with them in Florida. So cool!

So is it “Brevity is the Soul of Wit” or “One Picture is Worth A Thousand Words”?

If I understand your question, yes, no caption required on that one! Stayed away from it.

Not sure if it’s 100% for real, though.

LOL!

Well, I showed the pic to my hubby. He didn’t see teardrops or tatas. He saw...well, I won’t say what he saw, but let’s all just be very glad he’s not in charge of naming this stuff.

Beautiful photo.

I’ve seen pictures of these clouds but never in person.

I’ve only seen mammatus clouds once in my life, and I’m glad I did. Beautiful phenomenon.

Hahahahahahahahahaha!

Sigh...I love it. There is enough cynicism, anger, in so many of us, all the time, for so many things especially now, but...

I so appreciate silly, stupid, funny fellow humans. It is our saving grace.

And thank God for that...:)
