Trying to go to the store less during the coronavirus pandemic? 24/7 Tempo has assembled a list of foods that won't spoil quickly, making them good choices to stock should you want to quarantine.

1. Apples • Shelf life: 2 weeks to 6 months The apples we eat in spring and summer were often harvested in cooler weather. That's because they're a fruit that can stay fresh and crisp for as long as six months if they're stored in a cold, dark place (such as a root cellar in winter). If they're kept in a fruit bowl at room temperature, they'll generally remain at their best for at least two weeks, sometimes as long as a month.

Chickens on the hoof. Till they get old you also get eggs’

If you freeze flour for 30 days at 0F or below it will last for yrs. Freezing kills the bug eggs. Pour into a food grade plastic bucket and seal the lid. I have flour 15 yrs old that is still good.

If you have too much, the answer is break-downs. :-)

Yes, potassium is also critical.

Along with magnesium.

Supplements are inexpensive and can be had at a very good price at Swanson Vitamins, although potassium supplements are so ridiculously restricted by the government that going with some kind of salt substitute is a better deal.

“The reason: In a SHTF situation, fuel will be in short supply. We can use precious fuel to boil regular rice for 25-30 minutes. Or, we can heat water long enough to bring it to a boil, drop in the 5 Minute rice...and turn off the stove (kerosene).”

You can use the liquid in canned veggies or diced tomatoes for cooking rice and add the veggies to the rice. There’s approx. 3/4 of a cup of liquid in a 15 oz. can. This will reduce the amount of water you’ll need. Another thing you can do is to save the water used to cook pasta for one meal for making rice.

>> A number of condiments don’t require refrigeration. Ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, honey, molasses, hot sauces. Just look at the label to make sure. <<

They usually SAY refrigerate after opening whether you should or not. They like the appeal of SEEMING like they must be fresh. Some lose flavor faster when not refrigerated. Others are more prone to contamination. But if you buy it off an unrefrigerated shelf, there’s CERTAINLY no need to refrigerate it UNTIL you open it, although the shelf life of some (salad dressing) is shorter than others (immortal honey).

It’s not about going out or not.

It’s about having food when the supply chain tanks again.

“20. Winter squash - Shelf life: 1 to 3 months”.

A few years ago I had a rather large butternut squash harvest.

Much of it was still good a year later (stored in the basement).

Yes. Started in 1974 right out of school. Still work in an office on the far south building.

I first saw the building when it was a GE plant. That was when I was 9 years old on a road trip with my family. I think the Black Canyon Highway was still a two lane road.

King Oscar Mediterranean Style Mackerel Fillets in olive oil.

Dump the fillet and the oil into a big bowl. Toss with tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, some olives, a sliced pickled pepper or two, and a splash of red wine vinegar.

Toss gently, then devour!

I have some 2 year old multiplier potatoes sitting in a box in the garage that I was going to throw out, but they were beginning to sprout! Hellova shelf life!

Reconsidered and I’m going to put them in some 10 gallon fabric pots inside 10 gallon trade pots on my back porch and have green onions in winter.

Try and get some multiplier onions for your garden.

(I have leeks under Reemay in the garden and some Tuscan Kale growing in the garden without cover. (May cover it shortly.)

And, if you eat enough of them, YOU can also get stewed.

I always buy at least a week in advance. When the panic buying happened in March, I was ahead by 2 weeks (unintentionally) and it had nothing to do with the china virus..
