Microsoft pokes Cortana's corpse to give her telepathic abilities on Windows 10 (Latest build release)
The Register ^ | dec 4, 2020 | Richard Speed

Should we be worried?

The undead have telepathic powers if Microsoft's latest Windows 10 Insider emission is to be believed.

Perhaps stung by cruel criticism that the last batch of bleeding-edge Dev Channel releases have been a little light on features, build 20270 arrived overnight and apparently imbued Microsoft's unloved assistant, Cortana, with mindreading abilities.

Assuming one's PC has a mind of its own, of course (and judging by the shenanigans that seem to happen every Patch Tuesday, we're starting to wonder).

Cortana mindreading

"You can now use Cortana on your PCs to translate their thoughts into direct actions to open and find files and save time spent navigating to apps/folders to locate and open files," enthused Windows Insider bigwig Brandon LeBlanc as he trumpeted a new File Skill.

English-speaking US users can use Cortana to search for local files, if signed in using a Microsoft account, or in their SharePoint or OneDrive for Business storage for those with corporate credentials.

Folk using a Windows 10 device outside the US are sadly denied the prospect of barking file search orders at Cortana and must instead make do with common or garden search techniques.

Prodding of Cortana's corpse aside, the Dev Channel build also includes updates (already shunted to the Beta Channel as part of the Windows Feature Experience Pack) in the form of a split keyboard mode when a 2-in-1 touch device is in the portrait posture. An "Advanced View" checkbox has also been added to Optimize Drives to show hitherto hidden volumes.

Fixes include an issue where apps unexpectedly closed when a user clicked the maximise button as well as dealing with delays logging on to devices with lots of users. Known issues include the usual hangs when attempting to install a new build.

As ever, there is no guarantee that anything in the Dev Channel build will show up on the desktops of everyday users. Handy, because nobody truly wants to know what their PC is really thinking. ®

"Used Cars" starring Kurt Russell and it's one of Steven Spielberg's first films.

Absolutely hilarious!!!!

Featured Jack Warden and the two actors who played "Lenny and Swiggy"

The video is from the scene where Kurt's employee is shooting the used cars of his competitor, on national TV while they hacked into a national speech from pres Jimmy Carter.

"Those prices are just too f'n high!"

BOOM!

As others have said, windows server, sql, azure, web services, teams, powerbi, visual studio, Xbox is where it is at, microsoft also has a fantastic hardware team.

I agree that the consumer os (win 10) is annoying but i have only run server skus for since win2k

I still have my unopened copy of 2003 that billg signed :)

> Microsoft’s largest growth sector is Azure cloud with Teams a close second. To say Microsoft is being “kept afloat” by Office is ludicrous.

Ummm,... "Office" is now "Office365", and "Teams" is part of Office365. It's all hosted in Azure; traditional standalone Office is essentially a dead line.

So I'm unclear on your comment, since Azure includes Office365, and Office365 includes Teams. Seems to me that the growth of Teams is, by definition, part of the growth of Azure.

What differentiation are you making between Azure and Teams ("...Azure cloud with Teams a close second")?

Azure and M365 are two completely different product offerings. Plenty of organizations can get M365 without Azure. You use the Azure portal to admin users in Azure AD for M365, but the Azure IaaS/PaaS/SaaS are completely different SKUs and consumption metrics.

Teams is a separate SKU from M365 as well. MOST enterprise licensing for M365 includes Teams, but Microsoft internally tracks Teams consumption separately.

To be clear Azure != M365/Teams. Never has.

I'm not talking about Microsoft's internal accounting protocols. I'm asking "When I hit Office365, am I talking to something in Azure?"

E.g. When I want to revoke my Office365 app tokens, I have to first authenticate into Azure. So from my perspective, Office365 is part of Azure, functionally.

So, is Office365 (including Teams) hosted in the Azure cloud? If Office365 is not hosted in Azure, then where? In AWS? Google Cloud? Seems unlikely...

M365 is part of Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure, but it’s not the same. It causes a lot of confusion among customers, but they are two discrete offerings. Azure is their cloud. Azure AD is their identity PaaS. M365 is their office suite PaaS. Azure, M365, and Teams ride on the same backbone, so you’re technically correct.

The original argument was that Microsoft was barely holding it together with just Office as their revenue generator, and that’s just completely and utterly false. Azure consumption, Teams consumption, and M365 are their heavy hitters. There’s also XBox and Windows. Microsoft’s offerings are massive, and to say that Windows is a loss leader is absurd.

The absolute best movie Kurt Russell has ever done.

Not surprising Spielberg was involved.

"Your argument that Office is what's holding them together is still ridiculous. Meanwhile, you come at me with ad hominem attacks. Bravo."

When you use the term "ad hominem attack" I don't think you understand what it means. I did not attack you personally I just pointed out that you never addressed my judgment of Windows 10 which is craptastic and pointing that out is not an attack on you.

Cortana does not bother me one bit. The nasty beastie is safely caged on the other side of the seldom used partition. Linux works fine, no more a MS beta unit.

I had the same dilemma. I loved my Windows phone until the day it died. I went with an Android, LG. It has its good points but I would go back to a Windows phone if it was available.

Read the Register article and you’ll see why I’m glad to still be using Win 7. No plans to upgrade.

I suspect there are lots of folks like me.
