Weekly Garden Thread - November 28- December 4, 2020
November 28, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 11/28/2020 7:57:22 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Looking at Sunny and COLD starting next week. Today and tomorrow will be in the 40’s; it’s already above 70 in the greenhouse, so there’s still hope for ripening cherry tomatoes...and I’ll be harvesting and then re-planting more salad greens, today.

I am dismantling my Fall Squash Display and cooking up what is edible, and replacing the planter with greens I can cut from the house yard. We have various types of evergreens and red twig dogwood to use and there are always a zillion pine cones around for the taking.

Starting to put up ‘Christmas’ at my house and cleaning as I go. Back is bothering me, so it’s slow going, but I actually feel better when I’m moving around.

Have a Good Day, Everyone!

Does pre emergent weed control come in granular form? What about liquid? Recommendations?

Eric’s chili recipe

2-3 lbs. sirloin beef, trimmed, cut into cubes.
Or, 2-3 pounds mild spice sausage.
2 large yellow and two large red onions chopped.
2-3 jalapeno peppers seeded and chopped (more or less.)
2-3 tomatillos peeled and chopped.
12 green onions chopped.
4 green bell peppers seeded & coarsely chopped.
2-3 yellow or red bell peppers seeded & coarsely chopped (for color)
4-5 tomatoes blanched, peeled and chopped.
1 small can Contadina tomato paste.
4 teaspoons chili powder.
2 teaspoons salt.
2 teaspoons paprika.
2 teaspoons coarse black pepper.
2 cans Bush’s pinto beans.
1 can Bush’s black beans.
1 big pot.

Cut up beef and brown in pot. Drain off most of the fat. Mix in all the spices.
Bring to medium heat and add tomatoes, tomatillos and jalapenos and mix.
Then add onions, peppers and tomato paste.
If liquid is lacking (depends on tomatoes) add 1 can of beer.
Bring to a quick boil, mix and let cool.
Add beans.
Sprinkle chopped green onions on each serving.

Serve with corn bead or tortillas.

Finally going to get our first real freeze Sun night - Mon morning, last day of Nov, amazing. NWS not calling for snow where I am in Crawford County.

Heading outside right now. Near 50, sunny with no wind.

Yes. Pre-emergent is corn gluten. You’ll find it under the brand name, ‘Preen’ for a granular form or you can sometimes find sacks of corn gluten meal at Farm Centers.

Looks like Home Depot carries a product called, ‘Green It’ which is the liquid form you hook up to your garden hose.

That Chili looks good! Here's one I recommend for a quick meal or when you need a big crock pot of something to share:
