The bird is an adult male Saw-whet owl, one of the tiniest owls

NEW YORK (AP) — It wasn’t quite a partridge in a pear tree, but a worker helping set up the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree found a holiday surprise — a tiny owl among the massive branches.

The little bird, now named what else but Rockefeller, was discovered on Monday, dehydrated and hungry, but otherwise unharmed, said Ellen Kalish, director and founder of the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in Saugerties, New York, where the bird was taken.

Kalish said the bird is an adult male Saw-whet owl, one of the tiniest owls. It was taken to a veterinarian on Wednesday and got a clean bill of health.

“He’s had a buffet of all-you-can-eat mice, so he’s ready to go,” she said.

She said the plan was to release the owl back to the wild this weekend.

The tree, a 75-foot Norway spruce, had been brought to Manhattan on Saturday from Oneonta, New York, in the central part of the state. The tree is put in place and then decorated over some weeks before being lit for the public in early December.

Its in a mice/rat target-rich environment.

I just imagine that poor little owl vs. a New York rat (and I'm not even talking of the politicians).

Did this tree come from Whoville or Hooterville?

Sounds like Pneumonia to me. Needs a vet not a spit watchdog.

The only things I know about Hieronymous Bosch is his most famous (infamous) piece; A three panel painting called
Garden of Earthly Delights.

I think he counted those votes in Michigan, too.

Is it a federal crime to disturb the habitat of an owl?

There’s toy poodles.
He’s a toy owl. LOL
cute little fella.

Glad he’s back in my area.
I wonder if he’s going to miss that tree. He had a great view.
When reunited with his family, will he tell then how he was abducted by aliens...had the weirdest ride...twice ...was probed...and then was fed a great meal before being released.

I once brought a baby bird to Ravensbeard. At that time they had a huge white owl with a broken leg. It was awesome seeing one so close.

It is a pretty tree. Of course more than 10 people can see it at a time, and Any individual who encourages, promotes or organizes mass gatherings may be fined up to $15,000/day. Guess that would be the mayor. A shame if they try to cancel Christmas like Thanksgiving.

Given his size I’d advise him to stick to mice and skip the rats who

An owl found in the tree - Good omen? or bad omen?

I would say, removing the owl to another place because it was dehydrated and starving sorta lines up with people in NYC right now.

They are leaving NYC for other places so they can eat out and go to bars.

But a bigger one- no contest.

Owls are the ‘perfect predator’- highest kill ratio of any creature.

almost completely silent in flying, and the talons on even that little guy would rip or snip the backbone of the biggest rat. The talons on the bigger owls are scary, as in rip your face off scary.
