On Monday, the pharmaceutical company Pfizer released early analysis that suggested its COVID-19 vaccine was 90 percent effective. The announcement, while no guarantee of a vaccine, was a ray of hope for Americans awaiting an end to the pandemic at a time when new cases are setting records nationally by the day. But a vocal crowdwhich has drawn support from the anti-lockdown movement and other conspiratorial scenesis already voicing its opposition to a coronavirus vaccine.
Adding to the doubt is at least one member of the First Family, who cast suspicion about the vaccine following President Donald Trumps re-election defeat.
Hours after Pfizers Monday announcement, conspiratorial social media channels lit up with baseless claims. Some warned, without evidence, that the COVID-19 vaccine would come with ghastly side effects. This despite Pfizer indicating its candidate had produced no serious safety issues, at least so far, and an array of independent boards and other safeguards in place to prevent dangerous vaccines from reaching the public.
Others alleged, also without evidence, that the vaccine was actually a secret microchip and that Microsoft founder Bill Gates was going to use the microchips for nefarious (if somewhat unclear) purposes. Maybe mind-control, or depopulation.
Another set of critics opposed the very principle of getting a vaccine, claiming the not-yet-available shot amounted to a violation of their personal freedoms.
If these claims sound familiar, its because theyve flooded the internet since COVID-19 swept the planet early this year. The anti-vaccination movement was already loud and troubling before the pandemic, with the World Health Organization naming vaccine hesitancy as a top-10 threat to global health in 2019. But COVID, and its associated mask mandates and lockdowns, has turbocharged a new conspiratorial attitude that embraces anti-vaxx.
The closer a COVID-19 vaccine gets, the more bellicose those attitudes become.........

I think 90% of what they write is “without evidence”. They gather very little news, it’s mostly garbage.
What that means is not clear.
It is my understanding that no trial volunteers are deliberately exposed to the virus.
If that is the case, it just means that 90% did not catch COV-19 after getting two shots.
The trial group is about 40,000 volunteers.
It is not clear how large the placebo group is. Nor is the exact placebo infection rate disclosed.
Also - this vaccine requires two shots - 21 days apart - and maximum protection is not reached until 7 more days after the second shot.
Also - please note this curious postponement in reporting test results...
"After discussion with the FDA, the companies recently elected to drop the 32-case interim analysis and conduct the first interim analysis at a minimum of 62 cases. Upon the conclusion of those discussions, the evaluable case count reached 94 and the DMC performed its first analysis on all cases."
They were supposed to do a 32 case interim analysis - which would have come out BEFORE the election.
Instead, they waited to do a 94 case interim analysis.
I want to know how effective the 32 case report was. 90%? Better than 90%?
You first, jonrick46.
Actually - all the people you love need to go first.
Then - no matter the outcome for your loved ones - you get your mandatory shots 28 days later.
I understand they followed the exact protocol necessary to obtain approval. There was no rushing. In fact, I think the FDA forced some extra time in the phase 3 portion of the study.
What is rushed off the manufacturing where the government paid a lot of money to manufacture the vaccines prior to approval.

If you like your RNA, you can keep your RNA.
You can take that govt promise to the bank.
So we can trust these people who told us hydroxychloroquine was a killer and 30 days would flatten the curve.
First of all, R0 can only be measured with accuracy after the fact. Any posturing about what it is now is speculative, and FWIW your estimate of 10 is akin to mumps and chicken pox and beyond any known R0 estimate in the US by a wild multiple.
As for your 10% case fatality rate - you are waaaaay off for the nation as a whole. That CFR is possibly close to that for 80+ year olds. But not for the general public.
COVID19 is a highly contagious bug that can be nasty for many people and is fatal especially for the elderly and those with comorbidities. But as of this morning, we've had 10MM cases (not all of which are symptomatic) and 242k fatalities or a 0.242% case fatality rate. That's higher than the 0.1% CFR for influenza (where the vaccine has ranged from 20-60% effective in recent years) but it's not Ebola.
To suggest that normal, healthy people get the COVID19 vaccine is like suggesting that senior citizen woman take the pill to avoid pregnancy.
Ummmm...Pretty sure it was satire.
But don’t be surprised to read that on liberal outlets like the HuffPo. People there will take it seriously
The fact if the matter is that we also have a vaccines against chicken pox which has a low mortality. We have scones against measles and mumps. Low mortality.
People simply fail to get what vaccines are for (hint population health. Not personal health).
The anti scientists are quite wrong on this one.
Anti-vaxxers lost it or more like the Left stooges lost it?
So, that will create a market for forged covid passports. No biggee.
The survey for the unemployment number was conducted mid October; and, operation warp speed was announced in mid April.
I have been an empirical thinker since the 1950s.
I get vaccinated for everything because I am 100% self-focused about my own health.
Researchers have been futilely working on common cold (e.g., coronavirus) vaccines for at least 60 years.
Suddenly - in the middle of a political fire storm - we have multiple emerging coronavirus vaccines?
You and your loved ones go first, gas_dr!
A whole lot of nonsense for something that frontline doctors find very responsive to treatment. I understand that “most new cases” are asymptomatic but the media have paralyzed the public with mask-wearing fear; especially libs.
Snopes would probably tag that as false. The President said there would be one by election day, and so pfizer held off on the news until 5 days after. See? The President lied, they would say.
That works out to 2.42% - not 0.242%.
However, the total number of COVID-19 infections in the USA is at least 35 million (by the CDC’s own estimate), so the Case Fatality Rate is around 0.70%.
0.70% is quite high when compared to influenza.
Does not matter. Why?
Because the CDC does not count COVID-19 fatalities the same way it counts influenza fatalities.
When the word "COVID-19" appears on a death certificate, it is classified as the Underlying Cause of Death (UCD) almost 100% of the time.
When the word "influenza" appears on a death certificate, influenza is classified as the UCD only 5%-10% of the time.
The COVID-19 fatality rate in the USA has been a politically motivated scam since Day One.
The CDC modeled the end-game CFR to be around 0.4%, which likely takes your points into effect (i.e. 94% of fatalities with COVID19 on the death certificate also have at least one other comorbidity).
My point, made inartfully, is that this is a virus that can be very bad for a specific subsegment of the population. For most of us, it's a highly contagious yet non-lethal problem....it isn't the flu, but it's not pneumonia. Getting the vaccine should be an otion, not a mandate.
Shall we destroy the economy and our way of life over this, or learn to live with it like the flu, drunk drivers, meth heads, halitosis and of course Springsteen?
Anti-Vaxxers don’t have to take it (unless the government forces them to).
We agree.
In fact, I rank COVID-19 with the very worst USA flu outbreaks we had in 1968 and 1957.
But destroy the economy and make everyone wear a mask to stop it?
Total insanity.
I’m for a blue/white (mask) arm band.
