K-12: Errol Flynn and Appearances Can Be Deceiving
Renew America ^ | Oct. 27, 2020 | Bruce Deitrick Price

Errol Flynn is probably the most famous and beloved Hollywood star of all times. He's been dead 60 years. But a gushing fan on a tumblr page recently needed all these superlatives to describe him: “Errol Flynn, the most charismatic, talented, magnetic, handsomest, compelling, captivating, charming, delightful, enigmatic and fascinating man ever alive!”

He was dashing, tall, a natural athlete. A friend noted that no one ever took a bad picture of Errol Flynn. Six-foot-two,190 pounds, good boxer, excellent fencer, skilled dancer, he loved sports and especially sailing. He was Captain Blood and Robin Hood. He played many a military hero and led the Charge of the Light Brigade.

The amazing thing is that the leading man on the screen was not faking. Everything you see there was Flynn. He was a daredevil, scoundrel, and adventurer, brave and reckless, a thief and a liar, perhaps a murderer and rapist. Great company, always charming, he radiated confidence and good cheer. He especially loved women, lots of young women. He was determined to live life fully, to do what he pleased, and never care what other people thought. He spent the last year of his life on a sailboat with a great-looking high school girl, Beverly Aadland, who seemed to be in love with him.

After a 25-year run as an international star, Flynn dropped dead in 1959 at the age of 50. He was often in pain from various injuries, and often depended on alcohol and drugs for escape. But he looked good until almost the end, even though his internal organs were wasted. The final medical reports are shocking.

Even when performing his first movie role in 1935, age 25. he was sometimes knocked to the ground by intense pain due to recurrent malaria first contracted in New Guinea in the 1920s.

By 1942 the rot was well advanced. Flynn tried to join the army, which was expected of a male celebrity after Pearl Harbor. He was rejected as 4-F. His physical exam showed he had, in addition to the malaria, an enlarged heart, cardiac problems, chronic back pain, chronic tuberculosis, and various venereal diseases.

In 1952 he was seriously ill with hepatitis resulting from liver damage, caused by his addiction to alcohol and drugs. But Flynn was still taking movie roles and living the same triumphant physical life.

Eight years later he was dead and so completely consumed inside there was no point trying to pick a cause of death. The doctor thought everything was dying. "Natural causes" was the verdict.

Flynn was a mess, not at a glance but throughout his system, not so different from our public school system.

The autopsy listed Flynn’s serious problems:

Myocardial infarction, Coronary thrombosis, Coronary atherosclerosis, Fatty degeneration of the liver,, Portal cirrhosis of the liver, Diverticulosis of the colon,

As I read Flynn’s problems, I realized how much he was like our public schools, often very attractive on the outside, but suffering for many decades from cirrhosis of the liver, educationally speaking. Rotten, as they say, to the Common Core.

The list of K-12 pathologies is even longer than Flynn’s:

Constructivism, Sight-words, No memorization, Reform Math, Cooperative Learning, Learning Styles, Common Core, Project-Based Learning, Self-esteem, Systematic cheating and purchasing of essays, Etc., etc.

You can't see any of this rottenness when you drive by the school or walk down the central hallway. But when you read the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) scores that never improve; when you look at the vast budgets that don't buy much; when you reflect on the anecdotal evidence suggesting how close to absolutely nothing our high school graduates know; or when you stare into the empty, dispirited eyes of the students, you experience the decay in the system.

Beverly Aadland probably saw the same thing, in their last months together, as Flynn died on the inside.

For a short article on why our K-12 is comparable to Flynn’s autopsy report, see The War Against Children. For a book making the same case, see Sam Blumenfeld’s Crimes of the Educators.

-------

Bruce Deitrick Price's new book is: “Saving K-12 – What happened to our public schools? How do we fix them?” A good gift.

Yeah that’s the way to get people to listen.

Write down as many allegations as you can and mix it in with the truth also to deceive.

...dropped dead at 50...

I HOPE some day when this writer dies it says DROPPED DEAD in his obit. :)

My Wicked, Wicked Ways is an autobiography written by Australian-born American actor Errol Flynn with the aid of ghostwriter Earl Conrad. It was released posthumously in 1959 and became immensely popular for its cynical tone and candid depiction of the world of filmmaking in Hollywood.[1] My Wicked, Wicked Ways has sold over one million copies.[1] The book has never been out of print.[2][3]

He’s not the only one who died young. Who else? Gary Cooper? Think Bogart-57. Gary Chandler-close. Cancer took lost of them.

Like Alan Hale Sr’s Little John in both generations, Flynn was THE Robin Hood to me.

Grew up with his movies, and yes, I’ve read everything about him.

Flynn’s characters defined swashbuckling.

The author fails to mention if Errol has continued voting in any of the swing states since he “dropped dead” in 1959.

Always loved Errol Flynn’s movies.

Objective Burma and The Sea Hawk were two of my favorites... and of course Robin Hood.

Olivia De Haviland was stunning as Lady Marian... I would have “ravaged” her in Sherwood Forest, heheh....

“my favorite actor when I was a kid”

I couldn’t stand the guy, too much Errol Flynn for me.
But here’s a very interesting if not ironic video of
Flynn talking about his buddy Fidel Castro.

I think I recall reading that he and John Garfield were friends. Garfield died at the age of 39. He was known to have had a heart problem. David Niven and Flynn were friends too, and partied together. I loved Errol Flynn, and have a collection of his movies.

I liked Errol Flynn in his movies, however he was a pedophile. This is what “In like Flynn” refers to.

Search result: He once claimed: “I like my whiskey old and my women young.” Flynn also was rumored to have his house filled with peepholes and two-way mirrors to spy on women in his home.

did you see that biography on him on history channel i think it was? Was absolutely disgusting- He purportedly filmed couples in rooms without their knowledge- and was really quite a vulgar person if the report was true of him- I believe he was tried for 2 cases o statutory rape- one for sure-

I’m not sure about the hole in his heart. I did read that his doctors told him to take it easy, which of course he totally blew off. The day he died he was playing strenuous rounds of tennis. Went to dinner with a female friend and felt ill afterwards. She pushed him to see a doctor. He blew that off too. Said he just wanted to lie down, so she took him to her apartment, and left him alone for the night. The next morning when she went in to check on him, he was dead. He was also one of the actors who was questioned by the U.S. Congressional House Committee on Un-American Activities about communist leanings.

yep- a lot of actors actresses were questioned-

the U.S. Congressional House Committee should hold hearings today though on actors/actresses and question them about Un-American Activities about Liberal Leanings lol

Wouldn’t that be a hoot. Most of them have communist leanings, but love the money they make through capitalism.

IN LIKE FLYNN

the rhyming phrase became associated with actor Errol Flynn, who had a reputation for womanizing, consumption of alcohol, and brawling. In November 1942, two under-age girls, Betty Hansen and Peggy Satterlee, accused him of statutory rape.[2] A group was organized to support Flynn, named the American Boys’ Club for the Defense of Errol Flynn (ABCDEF); its members included William F. Buckley Jr.[3] The trial took place in January and February 1943, and Flynn was cleared of the charges. According to etymologist Michael Quinion, the incident served to increase Flynn’s reputation as a ladies’ man, which influenced the connotations of the phrase “in like Flynn”.[1] Columnist Cecil Adams also examined the term’s origins and its relationship to Flynn. Many early sources, attesting the phrase, say it emerged as war slang during World War II.[4]
