The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you wont be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Hi Everybody!
((((HUGS))))
hello, i am taking a break from the election news and busting my butt in garden today, Northern Va has beautiful weather for it.
I’ll be doing it AGAIN, soon as the rest of the leaves fall.
Also.... I planted a fall blooming camelia with buds on her- no action so far though.
Should I remove the buds before freezing weather sets in? Thank you in advance.
We in the northeast have a beautiful week ahead of us and I will (e going gangbusters in the garden getting it ready for early spring planting.
This is my favorite kind of fall weather.
Thank you for your reliable break from the crazy!
Today is beautiful (and finally dry) here in Kentucky. I have been looking forward to today all week. Was able to get outside and start painting a necessary project. Will get out and put the second coat on shortly.
And...of course...Praying for our President Trump!
Beautiful day yesterday so I planted some purchased plants. One is a red cabbage. The others are pansies for my recently deceased dog’s memorial garden. He loved pansies and would eat them when ever he had a chance. R.I.P. Sammy the chihuahua. Need to rake up all the leaves that are piling up. This Charlie Brown cartoon is a reminder I need to do that! lol
In for a break ..... was outside by 8 am & probably will “quit” after dark.
We’ve had fabulous weather this week & It should last thru Tuesday. I have been filling my compost bin with leaves - about every 2 days it’s settled enough I can add another load. I tried turning it a couple of days ago, but it’s just too much for me ... it will have to be a “cold” pile rather than a hot one.
The big project is getting my 4 new raised beds put together, situated, filled with dirt & the walkways covered with wood chips. The beds were very easy to put together, but you pretty much had to get on the ground to do it. I’ve been a bit sore after all the up/dows (not as young as I used to be), but all are now bolted & tightened.
Rough day yesterday out trying to buy some things & in a bad temper when I got home. Still “in a mood” I was trying to figure out how to situate the beds ... asked my SIL what she thought. She said to wait until I was in a better mood! So that’s what I did .... found the solution to several issues early evening (having enough space, getting the mower around them, leaving pathways open into the old garden). My SIL came up to see what I’d decided while walking the dogs - told me she “loves it” and I think that was a genuine opinion. She was actually excited for me, thinking of all the flowers I can grow.
Then there’s the mower, Clyde (JD920). Why in the heck people who design mowers have to make things so complicated is beyond me. My old mower had a simple “pin” arrangement for raising/lowering the mower deck - raise the deck with a handle, pull out the pin, put it in the new holes for the height you want, lower the deck on to the new pin placement. Easy peasy. With Clyde, I have a pedal to push down (takes all my weight behind it) to raise the deck (won’t adjust unless raised), then I have to turn a dial to “unlock”, spin something else to get the height, then turn the dial the other way to “lock”, then let off the foot pedal & the deck should lower. Well, the deck wouldn’t lower. I tried everything I knew to do over a day and a half ... really upsetting because I NEED to mow & it’s too high to cut anything. I whined about it to my SIL so she told my brother - he called last night & said to bring the mower down & he’d look at it. So I did. As he watched, I explained/went through the procedure for adjusting the deck height and guess what? When I got to the part where I let off the pedal & the deck should lower, it did!! Dead silence for a few seconds ... my brother just standing there with hands in pockets. I broke the silence by saying “THANK YOU so much for fixing my mower - you are the Magic Man!” We both got a good laugh out of it. He thinks I jolted something loose coming across the field with the mower so he could look at it. Whatever it was, jolting or he IS the Magic Man .... deck is now at a height where I can mow this afternoon. Good times, good times!! :-)
I am going to let the fwrden rest today
Sounds weird, I know....but every once in a while I let her be for a day or two.
I have been having an issue with the hoop covered raised bed. Darn dampness is killing off some of the eggplant flowers and causing some pepper stems to rot and mold.
Not much I can do since I cannot leave it open for several hours in this cold weather so just taking a hit on some of the production.
Going in to work today.....all overtime again today just as yesterday
Glad you’re still here for us! :)
Wisconsin weather is FABULOUS this week, too! Maybe some rain Monday night, but we are set to break warm-weather records all over the place this week and next. Yay! Will make Winter feel shorter! We already had inches of snow on the ground this time last year.
I have been cleaning out garden beds. I have 3 more to go, and I also have to cut down the asparagus fronds (and monster weeds) in that bed.
My ‘greenhouse in a greenhouse’ is doing well - ready to harvest some lettuces and get some more transplants into the ‘bag-o-dirt’ beds. Still no tomatoes forming - I just thing the temperature swings in the greenhouse are too much for them to properly set fruit. :(
Pictures later...
However there is one group of plants that are still thriving..........Radishes.
I guess radishes are hardier than tomatoes, cukes, peppers and egg plants. -Tom
What pretty flowers- Thanks for brightening my day.
I have a flat butt from sitting at computer since Tues AM.....
Snow predicted here tomorrow....colder every hour.
Farrier here yesterday to do trims. Cold—VERY windy & static electricity had horses jumpy.

What could Mrs Claus possibly grow in her frigid North Pole greenhouse?
Not much happening in the garden these days.
Lots of leaves though.
Gazing upon the American garden it is evident that a certain blight has overtaken much or most of it, increasingly turning what used to be verdant green produce and flowers into diseased vegetation. “An enemy hath done this” I thought to myself, and perceived that this decay was the work of a certain gardener, if he can be called that, who first appeared in this earth in a Garden.
Sowing sowing seeds of doubt, envy, victimhood and discontent and disobedience, he originally obtained some right to property, yet he seeks complete dominion, and finding fertile ground for his seeds he slowly turns such places that into a wasteland. His fruit at first produces an appearance of beauty, and at first is sweet, however, it creates an insatiable appetite for more while leaving a bitter taste, often leaving a root of bitterness, resulting in decay and death.
The only know antidote for this is from the Rose of Sharon, the powerful juice of which has healed all who receive it, thanks be to God.
