The latest mower adventure ..... I got MAJORLY bogged down in mud on Monday. When I mow, mentally I’m off somewhere else so generally not paying strict attention. Anyway, I decided to go around the perimeter of the back field first, especially since there are roots I have to deal with along the back fence & I hate doing that part, so I wanted to get it over with.

Tootling along the back fence and ran right into a “bog” - I was in it by maybe 5 yards before I realized “ruh roh - big trouble”. I got the mower cut off & started trying to back out (going forward obviously NOT an option). Actually, I did pretty well, but still had about 2 yards to go & was just working in deeper & deeper. I did get off (that was “interesting” - had to ‘jump’ for some ground that wasn’t over my ankles deep in mud) & gathered some sticks, etc. to go under the wheels - it helped for about 2 feet & then I knew I wasn’t getting out under mower power.

As I was assessing the mess I was in, along comes my SIL, doing the evening walk with the dogs. I asked if she’d wait while I got the old truck & some tow straps & she agreed to help (we’ve “been there, done that” before, getting my dad’s golf cart unstuck in that same back field). So I revved up the old PU, grabbed tow straps, & headed across the fields.

My biggest concern was getting the PU stuck, but there was fairly solid ground reasonably close to the mower. The mower had two holes, one on each side of the metal around the back that were perfect/solid enough for hooking an end of one tow strap into each hole. A 2nd strap gave me the length I needed back to the hitch on the PU. I stayed on the mower & my SIL drove the PU - it turned out that leaving the mower in neutral rather than trying to back at the same time was the best way to get pulled out - worked like a charm the first time. Whew!!!

Boy did I have a mess to clean up. I think the only place there wasn’t mud was in my ears! Clyde got a major wash & despite that, I was still finding stray, dried mud the next day. Fortunately, Clyde is working well, so no damage appears to have been done. We currently have almost 4 inches of rain in the gauge since yesterday (& heavy rain today thru 2:00), so I’m sure the mud hole I made looks like a pond today.

If you have not seen the movie “Kiss the Ground” (Netflix), I HIGHLY recommend it. The solution to ‘climate change’ is in this movie & it does not require getting rid of fossil fuels, or lots of moving money around from the USA to other countries etc. It is an elegant, simple solution ... won’t line any politicians pockets, so it’s going to have to be a grass roots solution.

Anyway, one “warning” ... you’ll see Woody Harrelson narrating initially. I almost quit right there, but stuck it out & I’m glad I did. The “leftists” who appear are greatly in favor of the solution, so that’s a good thing. The thing I love is that the Garden of Eden was first & we humans ruined it. We’ve continued to ruin the earth; however, the solution brings “Eden” back ... and you can still farm, etc. I think you’d very much like this movie - if you’ve seen it or watch it, I’d be interested in your thoughts.

I’m trying to find ‘Kiss The Ground.’ It’s not offered through Netflix (rentals) right now, which is weird, but it is a pretty current release.

We watched ‘Woody’ in ‘Midway’ last weekend, as Admiral Nimitz. It was good - stuck to the actual EVENTS and didn’t go off on love-dovey tangents.

Adm. Nimitz had a nuclear sub named after him; my ex-BIL was assigned to it for quite a few years. My ex was on the USS Kitty Hawk, which I was able to tour a number of times. Simply amazing, and hard to wrap your brain around how HUGE an Aircraft Carrier really is - not to mention LANDING a plane on one in the middle of the ocean!

Great mower adventure, LOL! I need to name my mower. The cars and trucks and tractor all have names - she needs one, too!

I got my mower stuck last year when I slid pretty much under the back deck and couldn’t get un-stuck. Beau was hunting (as usual) so my lovely neighbor ‘Enos’ came and pulled me out. I told him to feel free to mock me all he wanted, but he said he had no right, as he’s done plenty of dumb things himself. ;) He’s ex-Amish. Love the guy.

I got my mower stuck last year when I slid pretty much under the back deck and couldn’t get un-stuck.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I slid under the fence at one of the front entrances about a month or so ago. I ended up having to take the fence down to get out! The mower deck was actually under the fence ... I couldn’t pull/tow the mower forward because the deck would run into a fence post. Also, the fence was on a ‘hill’ that had become super slick (how I slid under the fence in the first place) & I couldn’t get a truck/tractor close enough to tow without them sliding as well.

I broke the bottom two boards during the initial slide/crash, so taking them off was a no-brainer. I thought about ducking down & trying to slide under the top board, but figured ‘better safe than sorry’ so I took it down too, rather than risk decapitating myself.

As I tried to work myself back out, it dawned on me that since the deck was already on the driveway (downhill) side of the fence post, if I could turn the mower slightly to the right & straighten it up a bit, I could probably slide on into the driveway .... and that is what worked!! Of course, the next day (Sunday) when my folks went to church (drive-thru Communion), dad did “notice” that the entrance fence was missing a few sections ... LOL!

Supposedly, Kiss the Ground is now streaming on Netflix (or you can rent on Vimeo for $1) ... check out the links here:

BTW, one of the farmers featured is Gabe Brown who wrote “Dirt to Soil”. My niece’s hubby is SO into this, it isn’t funny. He is a forester & part of what he does is wildlife food plots ... he uses no-till & if you want to get him talking, just bring up the subject!!

We have satellite internet, so ‘streaming’ out here sucks. I’ll just have to wait until I can find it on DVD in the future. And I will! :)

I have a little more seed shopping to do, because I want to be uber-prepared for next growing season. Just wanted to remind everyone to check out the All-America Seed Selections if you’re confused on seed varieties to use. They are truly ALL winners and never disappoint for productivity, beauty and disease resistance. We ‘growers’ are going to be part of the ‘resistance’ in the coming years, whether we like it or not. ;)

I still can’t guess where Qiviut is.

I’ve had plenty of country excitement here in CT suburbia.
My fallen hemlock measured 60 feet, 18 in. diameter
Wednesday, I took down the dead hemlock next to it ... 33 feet tall, 15 in. Diameter. Notch, back cut, crash.

I now have 2 six foot totem poles and put a poultry fence between them. Trees are the fence posts. I’ll see what the neighbor thinks.

Hemlock is no good for the wood stove. I can pile the logs and make a wall.

I didn’t make a YouTube video of the tree felling. Next time

OMG. These Buckeye chicks are too dumb to recognize a leftover hamburger (in the bun, etc.) as food. Not even when broken up & added to their chick starter. It is not moldy, sour, etc. Just eaten on by someone else.

Never had this problem B4!

The 2 white leghorns my wife thought were roosters are starting to lay. Yay!
