“In 1984 book, the rats represent Winston’s deepest fears because he is more afraid of them than of anything else. On a deeper level, however, the rats also symbolize the extent of the Party’s control over the people of Oceania.”

Thanks! That's one of the pictures I took when I was thinking about registering her. I decided against it since she's spayed.

The Feist breed is one of the first designer breeds. They consist of Rat Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, and other smallish terrier breeds. There are Treeing Feists and Mountain Feists but the Mountain Feists also tree. Some have folded ears and some have prick ears. Still, they are Feists regardless of the different combinations of terrier DNA. They have been around for hundreds of years and were bred to be small game dogs and believe it or not, protectors. The Scots brought some here from Scotland and the Cherokee kept them for hunting small game, protecting the kids, and watchdogs. Mine are called Cherokee Mountain Feists. A smarter dog never lived. They are typically used to tree squirrels but will chase down a rabbit. Abby prefers squirrels and Amy prefers rabbits. The third one is actually my daughter's dog Jack and the littermate to my Amy. All three are siblings. I keep him during the day so he can play with his sisters. I also have a fenced yard and she doesn't. Abby is one litter older than Amy and Jack. Jack is a digger of rats and moles. LOL

Needless to say, not much vermin around here inside or out!

They are a special kind of dog for sure! I can’t get over how many people don’t know what they are and was a little surprised that you do. Most of the mountain folk here had them when I was a kid.

Pretty beast girl. A Mountain Feist is an official breed?

I’m not surprised they have a strong protection streak. I am actually MORE afraid of the little dogs than I am the big molossers. Yorkies are my nemeses, but that’s a personal thing.

Currently, I have the weirdest breed of dog that I’d never even heard of until this one was literally thrust into my arms in a parking lot one rainy morning. A Carolina dog. They’re feral and weird, but loveable.

“I have a little fluffy dog who’s half Lhasa Apso and half Shitzu. He will attack rats and shake them to death................”

Me and my German shepherd chased a very large mouse around the barn. I never thought she would catch it. I was wrong. When I tried to get it away from her she very audibly crunched it up and swallowed it whole. She is not allowed to lick me, ever again. I know she has killed a full grown rabbit, two squirrels, and a mole, but she didn’t eat them.

They are trying to make them an official breed for all registries by tightening the registration rules, requiring pedigrees, etc. but they can be registered in some hunting dog registries as either a Mountain Feist, a Treeing Feist, or just Feist. To me, if they can be registered in any registry, they are a breed. LOL They are actually a “type” of hunting dog.

As an example, I had an Appaloosa horse that was half Appaloosa and half Quarter Horse. I was able to register him as an Appaloosa but not a Quarter horse. Same thing with Feists. Even though they have other terrier breeds in their DNA they can be registered as a Feist but not a Jack Russell or a Rat Terrier. They meet the breed standards of a Feist but not either of the other two. The reason I could have registered Abby was because she met all the breed standards of a Feist. It’s confusing.

IMO, being what they are is better because they are healthier than dogs that have been overbred. I’m not a fan of some breeders. I’m afraid they would ruin them.

I have heard of those and heard they were great dogs.

You know what the best thing about a Feist is? Even though they have some JRT DNA they are usually a better natured less snappy dog. I had two JRT’s before these that passed of old age and I love a JRT but most I have been around were quick to snap first and look later. The Feists have a really sweet and gentle nature.

I can relate to the feral part. I have two big Curs outside that are half Black Mouth Cur and half feral. Great dogs but the feral gene shows itself sometimes. :-)

You sound like you really know what you are doing. Good for you . Whatever they call your dog, she’s a beauty.

That principle works both ways, though. Some people have crossed dachshunds with other breeds with disastrous results. I knew one in FL whose long legs couldn’t really hold up his heavy body. Poor little guy was always in pain.

I’m a dog person.
;)
I also like Black Mouthed Curs and would LOVE to have a Plott someday or even a Catahoula.

I grew up with Coon Hounds of several kinds and they’re still in my heart.

:)

That’s a huge problem when they cross two breeds that are nothing alike. With Feists you have a mix that are similar to each other.
