Starting next month, users trying to access certain websites will see IE refuse to load the URL and automatically open the site in Edge instead.
This forced IE-to-Edge behavior is part of Microsoft's Internet Explorer deprecation plans.
Microsoft has been gradually rolling out the feature for testing purposes for some Windows users since the release of Edge 84 this summer.
However, with the release of Edge 87, scheduled for next month, Microsoft plans to enable the forced IE-to-Edge action for all IE users.
At the core of this new feature is a new DLL file that Microsoft has been silently adding inside Edge installations over the summer.
The DLL file, named ie_to_edge_bho.dll, is a Browser Helper Object (BHO). BHO files are plugins for Internet Explorer. This file is installed at:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Edge\Application\[VERSION]\BHO\
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\[VERSION]\BHO\
Even if the BHO file is stored inside the Edge folder, the BHO is loaded via a registry key inside IE every time the user starts Internet Explorer.
This BHO works by monitoring what websites a user is trying to access, regardless if the navigation comes from clicking on a link or by typing the URL in the address bar.
Every time this happens, the ie_to_edge_bho.dll file checks to see if the user's URL is found on a list of sites with known IE incompatibilities.

I hate edge
I hate edge
This has been happening for several weeks, already, in my experience.
Why anyone would be running a microsoft browser of any sort is beyond me..
Microsoft... the rapist company. First they forcibly update your computer to Windows 10 without permission when you sleep.
Now they do this.
They aren’t real big on consent apparently.
Windows XP is the greatest OS in home computing history. IE is a great browser.
Just keep the mofos and do updates on them instead of getting rid of them or letting Chrome eat IE lunch.
Firefox?
Chrome?
Brave?
I thought Windows 7 was everything WinXP was but more secure and stable. I could have lived with Windows 7 indefinitely. I disagree about IE. It was a sieve from a security standpoint.
FF FTW.
I use Chrome. Quicker than Edge. Only use Edge for a few sites that Has an issue with Chrome. And I can set my search engine instead of being stuck with Edge/Bing.
“They arent real big on consent apparently.”
Or honesty.
Or quality.
Gates was a great crook.
Nothing more.
Microsoft’s defacto way to destroy their presence in the browser market and hand the whole thing to Chrome and Firefox.
MS does not realize just how much Edge, which does not behave properly in a windowed envirinment, is hated.
The only people who will use it will be server maintenance techs who must.
87? Still waiting for Edge to catch up to Windows 95?
Both Windows XP and 7 were the best O/S’s that MicroThief put out. I still have both programmed on hard drives that I currently use.
“Now they do this.
They arent real big on consent apparently.”
Apparently you do not understand what they are doing.
They are doing automatically what you would have to do manually .
