Why can't Microsoft just stick with what works?

Windows XP is the greatest OS in home computing history. IE is a great browser.

Just keep the mofos and do updates on them instead of getting rid of them or letting Chrome eat IE lunch.

I thought Windows 7 was everything WinXP was but more secure and stable. I could have lived with Windows 7 indefinitely. I disagree about IE. It was a sieve from a security standpoint.

Internet Explorer had to get jettisoned for the same reason the MSDOS-based Windows 1-2-3-95-98-ME series had to get jettisoned. It could not be worked on and fixed, it could only be bandaided and kept alive by spit and baling wire. And finally the time came when even that no longer worked.

I hate Edge — I’m certainly not a fan. But it’s at least stable and has a future. IE’s future stopped 5 years ago and died, just like Win98’s future stopped and died in 2002 with the ascendency of WinXP.

IE is horribly insecure, and while I generally say “To each their own”, I would never recommend its continued use. I personally favor Firefox, then Brave, then Chrome. Edge isn’t on my list.

Agree totally.

I keep an old XP box around because it’s the only environment in which a piece of ancient (late 90s) software will successfully run (necessary to operate a unique, irreplaceable, and very valuable piece of test equipment). XP emulations won’t work.

That XP system will be up and running before my Win 7 box gets to the login screen.

XP has its faults, and there is the security issue, but for what I do, I don’t see any advantages to any later OS.

Because then they'd be Linux...
