As someone who took Statistics in college with a textbook entitled "How to Lie With Statistics", these numbers could mean almost anything.
What determines a new case? Someone who has been tested and tests "positive for the virus? Are they asymptomatic or are they sick with symptoms? Are these people who have been hospitalized?
Are the deaths of people with Covid-19 when they die or deaths from Covid-19 itself as the primary cause?
None of these numbers mean anything unless the terms are defined.
Fair or not, MSM is running with it and using that statistic to blame Trump and get Biden in the White House.
Then they should use the fatality figures. Here and in Eurooe while test positive rise to past heights, fatalities have not risen in anything approaching past levels even though these rising numbers have been goung on for almost a month. It’s possible the virus has mutated to a weaker form.
That's what I suspect. It's not the same strain that killed tens of thousands in NYC and Northern Italy during March - April.

People are making money and political hay out of this pandemic. It's human nature to make it look worse if there is money in it for the hospitals who code everything that comes in their doors as covid.
Liberal politicians and the globalists can use the "spiked" numbers to make Trump look like he's a failure in dealing with the pandemic in order to get him out of office. It's no coincidence that the Biden campaign has chosen to focus on the corona virus the last two weeks of the campaign instead of things like improving the economy.
There is an entire cottage industry grown up around dealing with this corona virus, like wearing masks. People are wearing masks as fashion statements now. Doesn't look to stop anytime soon.
Social distancing requirements have generated millions of dollars in profits for the commercial printing industry by printing decals and stickers for businesses to place on the floors to keep people apart.
One thing that would actually make people safer is hardly mentioned anymore and yet it is the best way to keep from getting the virus. Washing your hands regularly and not touching your eyes, nose or mouth with them is the best way. But there's no money in that.
Call me a cynic but I can see a government scam a mile off after 7 decades on this earth. I've lived through numerous pandemics before and hardly a peep was heard from the news media, medical experts or government officials about them at the time. People died and the world moved on.
This is the first pandemic that required masks, social distancing, lockdowns and shutting down the economy in my entire life. Why? Again, call me a cynic but the democRATS have a stake in making this thing look as bad as they can make it because of the election year.
Ruin Trump's booming economy, have millions of people lose their jobs that requires a couple of gigantic stimulus packages to take care of them. Just coincidental that they pack the bills with decades long liberal pork projects on top of helping the citizens. Get rid of Trump. Practice their population control methods by playing wannabe dictators in the blue states. Justify the riots, arson and looting or our cities. And on and on and on.
There are reasons this virus was treated differently than previous ones. It's not hard to see by the manipulation of the facts and numbers. Again, call me a cynic, but someone has been playing loose and free with the numbers to benefit their ideology and it has very little to with the actual danger from the virus itself.

Not manipulating, but not reporting the fatality rate or the Infection Mortality Rate or Overall Mortality Rate infection versus the misleading not case fatality rate.
At 68 myself I can much concur, but also there was never such a pampered, selfish, easily offended easily deceived and anti-authority rebellious generation in American, preparing the way for a anti-Christ.
