There is no circle.

Is it a 3D circle. You could say front and back in that case.

triangle = 3 sides
rectangle = 4 sides
pentagon = 5 sides
hexagon = 6 sides
number of sides approaches infinity
circle = infinite sides

I agree this is not a 1st grade question and is a trick to get the kids to think everything is relative.
There are no sides though. A side is defined by two points that have other point/s linearly between the two. Since there is always a point between two points on the curve that is not linear with those two points, there are no sides.

Interesting, reminds me of calculus using the differential from zero to infinity.

so taking that one step further (or rather to the beginning) you would start:

point = 0 sides
line = 2 sides

Yes. Mesh density and number of nodes is the key. Related to processing power and time available to wait for a solution....

It’s all relative.

I don’t know about all that, but a cylinder has 3 surfaces.

From Quora:

"A circle is an infinitely long line. There are only two sides of any line. Therefore the Circle has only TWO sides. Philosophically, the two sides represent what is contained within the circle (One Side) and what is contained outside the circle (Second Side)."

We were always told a circle has no sides, but then I went to school when the knowledge imbedded in our brains was normal, and didn't consist of 2+2=5.

As a teacher in the early seventies, the question for a FIRST GRADER would relate to geometric shapes. A triangle has three sides, a square has four sides, so how many sides does a circle have. The Answer would be zero sides. Reason: if asked how many sides to a square the ‘inside and outside’ uses of ‘side’ would be irrelevant since the question is a geometric question and the ‘inside and outside are not geometric uses.

Stop being so noncommittal and choose a side.

The reason behind this question is to teach/indoctrinate kids at a very early age that there is no right or wrong answers, that everything is relative.

Except there are right and wrong answers.

Eighteen would be a wrong answer.

A circle has 2 sides. It has an inside and an outside!

The inside, the outside, and the flip side.
