Nord Stream 2: Poland fines Gazprom billions

Russian energy giant Gazprom pledged to appeal what they described as an “unprecedented” fine after the Polish anti-monopoly watchdog UOKiK ordered them to pay some $7.61 billion (€6,47 billion) over the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

The Polish regulator said that building the pipeline would increase Gazprom’s dominance on the Polish market. The project, which would allow Germany to double its gas imports from Russia, is “tantamount to breaking the rules of law and of fair competition” and the current situation may trigger “serious consequences for Poland’s and the EU’s economy,” they added.

Gazprom is spearheading the Baltic Sea construction effort and is also paying for half of it, while the other half is financed by five Western companies — ENGIE, OMV, Royal Dutch Shell, Uniper and Wintershall. These companies have also been ordered to pay millions in fines. […]

Poland is one of the most vocal critics of the project, which would allow Russia to deliver the fuel directly to its biggest buyers. The route bypasses central and eastern European countries that usually collect lucrative gas transit fees. Additionally, the pipeline would sharply reduce the countries’ bargaining power in the event of a supply row with Russia, which is especially important for Ukraine, as Russia would have an alternative supply route at its disposal. Many in Brussels are also irritated by the German insistence on the project, as EU officials hope to reduce the bloc’s energy dependence on Russia. However, Berlin has plowed ahead and defended the upcoming pipeline as a purely business venture, despite some domestic discontent. Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, known for his ties to the Kremlin and Gazprom, also serves as the chairman of the pipeline project. …

I think it is about time for Germany to start defunding Poland.
The reasoning is rather simple. The pipeline is certainly not a threat to the Polish and Ukrainian supply because Poland has an LNG terminal to import from whoever.

After Katyn Massacre (1) in April and May 1940 (22,000 murdered by Stalin's NKVD) and what is referred to as Katyn Massacre 2, On 10 April 2010, who would blame Poland for total mistrust of Russia in anything.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katyn_massacre

On 10 April 2010, an aircraft carrying Polish President Lech Kaczyński with his wife and 87 other politicians and high-ranking army officers crashed in Smolensk, killing all 96 aboard the aircraft. The passengers were to attend a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre. The Polish nation was stunned; Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who was not on the plane, referred to the crash as "the most tragic Polish event since the war." In the aftermath, a number of conspiracy theories began to circulate. The catastrophe has also had major echoes in the international and particularly the Russian press, prompting a rebroadcast of Katyń on Russian television. The Polish President was to deliver a speech at the formal commemorations. The speech was to honour the victims, highlight the significance of the massacres in the context of post-war communist political history, as well as stress the need for Polish–Russian relations to focus on reconciliation. Although the speech was never delivered, it has been published with a narration in the original Polish and a translation has also been made available in English.

Not even at the very least connected.
As for a plane crash it is off completely because it was self-inflicted.

Germany doesn’t fund Poland. There are EU-level initiatives. But Germany itself doesn’t fund. You Russians are mistaking that with the Norwegian and Swiss funding

it's "off" what?

And the interesting part is that after the plane crashed, Russia was insistent on not letting anyone near the crash site for some time. Why the cloak and daggers if they had nothing to hide?

The question is what percentage of Poland’s national gas requirements can be fulfilled by that LNG import facility?

I suspect it’s a small percentage.

Incompetent flight planning, incompetent crew, incompetent CSAF in the cockpit forcing the crew to land under minimum weather on unimproved airfield after TWO missing approaches in heavy fog.
It looks more like a suicide than an accident, let alone actions of the third party.
Voice record is available for years. There is too little room for conspiracy theories.

Each delivery runs Poland for 3 days. But why are we spending money defending Germany from Russia while Germany is making itself dependent on Russia?

What does it mean dependent? Do you believe in solar power and wind turbines? What are your alternatives?
As for defence I don’t think Germany would miss it.

Are the oceans awash with LNG ships looking to off-load?
Can Poland pick and choose from a plethora of LNG transporters to sustain their supply?
The LNG terminal “argument” is a red herring.
Sloppy.

Not mine argument but theirs. They brag for years that LNG would replace Gazprom’s ‘political’ gas.

If not it is kind of stupid to alienate the top supplier. There would be repercussions, not to mention that the decision of Polish authorities regarding Gazprom and things unrelated to Poland are about as relevant as a ruling of Zimbabwean judge regarding Boeing.

According to another freeper each delivery only runs Poland for three days. I don’t know if that’s winter or summer. The dependence on Russia is real.

You seem a little ignorant of history, even recent history.

And Germany return to bossing other countries around, really?

Dependent isn’t the word. Historically, those two countries cooperating is a precursor to making war.
