Why do folks equate modern patriotism with christianity?

Posted on 09/28/2020 3:03:47 AM PDT by Terry L Smith

Why is it, in today's modern American society, there are folks that are attempting to glue together the words 'patriotism' and 'christianity', as if there were no other ways to define 'American patriotism?

I am a Viet Vet, and I can tell you, all those 45 years and longer ago, there were patriots shedding their blood for y'all's freedom, that did not label themselves as 'christian'.

Now, here, in the time of Trump, the shouts rise up for all good christian patriots to step up, etc.

That speaks volumes of 'shunning' to everybody else that did patriotic things, including dying in sand spitpot to defend your freedoms, who might not align with the desired religious moldform.

All I got to say is:

1. Don't bother throwing bible verses in response, because you've just proved my point.

2. Thanks a freaking lot, because y'all don't need nor want my help.

The left equates Christianity and patriotism with evil.

Conservatives do not conflate the two.

What did they label themselves?

With all due respect, nobody does that. Why repeat a leftist talking point as if it were in any way true?

America was founded on Judeo-Christian principles. In world history, America as a self-governing democratic republic, is unique. America begins with the premise of God given inalienable rights. The left wants to take that away, and burn our country to the ground in the process. Figure it out.

While you are figuring, open a Bible. There you will discover how God created the world, how we are all sinful every day, that the penalty for sin is death (not the natural death, but the death of being removed for all eternity from the presence of God in heaven when we physically die), and that God sent his one and only son, Jesus, to pay our penalty on the cross. You will also learn that if you repent of your sin (as I’ve repented of mine), and accept Jesus as your savior, you will not spend eternity in hell, but you will spend it in heaven with God.

As real as life is to us, in the concept of eternity, our individual lives are merely a blip in time. Decide now whether you’d rather spend eternity in hell, a truly awful and horrible place, or heaven, living forever in the presence of God Almighty.

A “No” decision means hell. A “I’m not sure” decision means hell. A “Go away and quit talking to me about this” decision means hell. A “Yes, I repent and accept Jesus as my savior” decision means heaven.

Accepting Jesus as your savior will not make your life easier. It will, though, make it clearer. Know Jesus, know peace. No Jesus, no peace.

And thanks for your service to our nation. I served in the Navy during the Vietnam era, but did not go to Vietnam. I salute you for your service. May God bless America, and may America be worthy of His blessing.

In order for Marxism and/or Islam to dominate America, Jesus has to be driven from our lives. Anyone who resists is an enemy of the left and therefore a “Patriot”.

At the very heart of patriotism and of conservatism is Christianity. Or at least the core values of Christianity such as the Ten Commandments and God, Family and Country.

At the very heart of liberalism is hate, greed, tyranny and social disorder.

You don’t have to be a Christian to be conservative. But it helps.

!. I have never heard any of us "conflate Christianity with patriotism" - maybe you've been getting your information from CNN or the Southern Poverty Law Center.

2. "45 years since you served in Vietnam"? What did you do, turn out the lights? The real meat of our war was 50 or so years ago - the Hill Battles, Central Highlands, Tet, Hues City, Khe Sanh. When were you there and what MOS? (and please don't BS: I wish I had a Nickle for every fraud who said that he served in "MAC-V/SOG)

3. You don't have to be a Christian to be a patriot - but it helps, because our nation was founded on Christian principles. If anything, my time in Vietnam in combat refined and enhanced my own Christianity.

The country was founded on Judas Christian traditions which means Jewish and Christian beliefs. Ruth Ginsberg was a Jew, and Any Barrett is a Christian. Diane Feinstein a Jew, Donald Trump a Christian. What does it say on your birth certificate?

Ayn Rand is widely admired at least in part by many Freepers openly, even though she was rabidly pro-abortion and anti-Christian. It didn’t stop us from seeing valid and true points she made.

Christian Faith is a Gift from God, and He may only offer that gift in late years, or multiple times before acceptance, as He did with Judge Bork. Freepers uniformally admired Judge Bork even before his late coversion to Catholicism, because he was right on many things, and showed virtue in not collapsing before his accusers.

We cannot be expected to check our central beliefs before signing on, however.

Best to you!

My father served two tours in Vietnam, 5 of my brothers, and my husband are Vietnam vets. Not one of them conflated patriotism with Christianity, and they are all Christians.

Our patriotism stems from the fact that in America we are free to practice our religion. Doesn’t matter if your religion is Wicken, Roman Catholic, Satanism or Southern Baptist ... you are free to practice the religion of your choice or no religion at all. That’s something worth fighting for.

Thank you for your service, sir, and for protecting our rights.

Thank you for your service lost a cousin and a neighbor in that war. Had another cousin that came back pretty messed up and never straightened his life out, another cousin (his brother) that did do well. I would think if a bomb shell or troops were headed towards my foxhole the first thing I would do is pray.

I took a constitutional law course in law school. The professor was a classic 1960s professor. He was really good at teaching his subject and loved arguing both sides of an issue.

One of the first things we learned is that the founders did base the Declaration of Independence and the constitution on the New Testament whereas European govts were based on the Old Testament (as it was understood then). In the Old Testament, God delegated some of his power to Kings and Kings delegated some of their power to the people. Under the New Testament, God gave free will to the people and the people gave some of their power to the govt. We read several colonial pieces that laid out the structure and linkage to the Bible.

Also note that during that period, different Christian denominations fought like blood enemies, e.g. the religious battles in Penn. So it wasn't like we all hugged and sang "We Are All One."
