First let me preface by saying I apologize if too much personal info but I didn't know who to ask. My father just got put into the hospital with either bladder/kidney or prostrate issue. They found blood in the urine. They catheterized him but he is still feeling the incredible pressure/pain where he feels he needs to urinate constantly and he hasn't slept for days (driving him crazy). The nurses and doctor say this is normal. When a man gets catheterized do men still continue to feel pressure and pain? With women it takes the pressure away but the doctor said with men they will continue to feel pain and pressure. I just don't want my dad suffering unnecessarily in the hospital so I am asking for input. Really appreciate it and sorry if I got too personal. I just hate to see my dad suffering.
Catheterization not cauterization.
Same symptoms, stay hydrated, I passed 2 small kidney stones, due to dehydration,
thank you doc for that info! Passing it to my mom. I am hoping something helps here...
I am guessing they did check and are waiting for the results...he is 81
now this would not surprise me...he fills a small 16oz bottle of water and sips it throughout the day (maybe ends up drinking 12oz) and thinks he did great!
head nurse just told my mom they gave him anti-spasm medicine maybe 6 hours ago...wouldn’t it start working by now?
Why dont you believe the doctors and nurses
Quit trying to second guess
Depends on the antispasmodic

Oh goodie — Dr. Reddit. Only slightly less credible than Dr. Google.
“One of the problems with this opioid crisis is that people with a legitimate need for pain relief get denied it.”
I’ve been dealing with that idiocy (personally). Fortunately, I saw an endodontist today who was reasonable and - based on what he saw - said I must have a very high pain tolerance. It wasn’t by choice!
That was my suggestion, B&O suppository. Also have them make sure the catheter is in proper position. Sometimes it isnt fully inserted and the balloon is still n the urethra. This is very uncomfortable.
Had one of those one time...Gave them the option of taking it out or I would, but it was definitely leaving my body...They took it out...
Immediately, this sounds like an enlarged prostate that has prevented him from fully emptying his bladder in a timely fashion. It may have caused some kidney issues.
There are surgical options, if this is the case. There is also an option that does not require surgery that I would favor, if I had a serious problem:
I hope this helps your situation. May your father improve quickly.
They told me my husband was just having a touch of gastroenteritis and to take him home. I insisted there was more going on, they finally agreed to do a CAT scan to shut me up. 90 minutes later they were rushing him into surgery.
It was appendicitis and it burst as they were removing it.
A couple of weeks later they told me that he was becoming addicted to the pain killers because he was complaining of extreme pain and they just knew it could not be a problem.
I asked his surgeon to stop by and take a look at him. She took about a minute to see that he had a major infection that was causing the pain.
Quit trying to second guess
If I did not second guess the doctors I would be a widow twice over.
They know medicine, but I know my husband.
She knows her dad.
If she thinks there is a problem then there is a good chance that there is.
Its not that I don’t believe the doctors, however, sometimes asking for more help for a loved one is not a bad thing and I had never heard once a catheter it in, one still feeling incredible pain and discomfort which is why I bothered to post TO GET SOME INPUT. Not in any way to bash a doctor or nurse! So please give me an ever loving break!! I am at my wits end dealing with a crying 81 year old mom and a dad half out of his mind in pain crying to me on the phone
awesome link- THANK YOU!! I’m saving it for any future issues :)
Your statement they no medicine, but I know my husband is the MOST IMPORTANT THING for people to understand. When I have a family saying this is NOT normal for a family member, I ALWAYS listen to it. because it is true, I know medicine, but I dont live with the person in front of me.
Oliver Wendel Holmes famously once said — listen to the patient, 99% of the time they will tell you whats going on.
Something we often forget on this side of the hospital bed...
I have set multiple doctors straight, and had them thank me.
Trust, but verify and learn the latest studies. Your doctors dont read them and are going from what they learned in school, 40 years ago.
