A 41-year-old woman died after hiking in extreme heat in the Santa Monica Mountains on Saturday with temperatures above 110 degrees.
The woman was hiking with a friend and began to feel sick, so the pair turned around and headed back toward the car, according to preliminary reports from the LA County Sheriff's Department. Her friend called paramedics after the woman collapsed.
Paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived on the scene where they conducted CPR on the woman for about 20 or 30 minutes, said Arteaga, but were unable to revive her.

Yep. We got smart quick. The order went out. Every swinging d-— had to drink on the half hour. NCO’s or whoever was in charge of your detail had to see you do it.
Pickles and juice keep my husband from developing heat cramps in his strenuous construction work in south Florida. There is absolutely no evaporative cooling with the high humidity. One is sweat soaked all day. Two years ago he was hospitalized after cramping so bad his legs were kicking uncontrollably like a marionette.
Pickle juice apparently contains trace minerals and electrolytes besides sodium and potassium. Perhaps magnesium, even selenium?
Hand cramps develop first in which case he takes some. Even V8 and combinations of other juices salty and otherwise don’t help. They also make frozen pickle juice popsicles.
He made a typical COVID joke...and a good one.
Every death is a COVID death. According to the press today, there is a HUGE number of COVID deaths from the Sturgis, SD motorcycle rally a couple weeks ago.
But you knew all that.
Sometimes the /s is just so darn obvious that the /s is not required. This is one of those times.
Saved.
Three Canadian college students hit the trail about the same time we did for s fifty mile backpack trek.
One had flip flops. Moron.
To his credit he finished. In pain.
It’s what plants crave!

First trip to the stumps I and my bros had stayed at the E-club until closing the night before.
I was still throwing up at morning formation.
Got off the bus at the stumps with a hangover so bad I wanted to die.
My First Shirt was laughing his ass off at me, told me we were forming up to step off for a special 10 mile forced march in my honor. That’d fix the hangover real good.
I was not a popular person during that particular training deployment.
Thank the Good Lord I was in the infantry and there’s always someone in that crowd doing something stupid so my stupidity was quickly over written by someone elses.
Yep, it's absolutely essential. There are some really good supplements out there as well that will provide the necessary electrolytes with the sugar.
Broke records on Sunday in Woodland Hills at 121 degrees + 120 in Chino. Hell, we had 116 at the 57/210 interchange too.Everyone here in L.A. Knew it wasn’t a day to go hiking, it is such a needless death.
I dont understand how anyone can hike in 110 Degree temperatures, humidity or no humidity. It sounds extremely dangerous, no matter what shape one is in.
I can no longer tolerate the heat and humidity here in Alabama. During the day, I stay in the air conditioning as much as I can.
This may seem weird, but if I am outside on hot, humid days, my anxiety kicks in and if I dont get inside, I suffer an intense panic attack. The heat anxiety started around four years ago. I dont know why the heat triggers panic attacks. Thats why, when I have to be outside in hot weather, I keep my Klonopin, Gabapentin and plenty of fluids close at hand.
My sympathies go out to the family and friends of this woman.
How long was she in the sun?
___________
Another article stated that she started at 8:00 a.m.
What a loser. I went on a 6 hr bike ride Sunday and it was 107
Drink. LOTS of water. LOTS.
When I was a college basketball player in the early 1970s. I would pound down 1/2 gallon of water and 2-3 salt pill, another 1/2 gallon half way through practice and another 1/2 gallon plus 2 more salt pills at the end. It was pretty arid and 2750 elevation at the school. I was a freaking sweater; had to wring out my practice jersey 3 times during a two hour practice.
Yikes! Hopefully lesson learned! We’ve had people airlifted off our neighborhood mountain for much less!
“So I bring a lot of fatty snacks.”
Pepperoni sticks!
“And Electrolytes! Especially salt.”
Definitely.
They told us they realized they were out of their element before they even started.
Young and stupid, but I’m sure they outclassed most of their friends because they actually backpacked 50 miles.
I once did 12 or 13 miles with a full pack in 100 degree temps (95% RH)
Yea, it was pretty brutal but we had lots of water and the ability to filter more.
I have a small Sawyer filter. I took it on a short four mile hike last weekend.
I realized 1/4 mile in that I forgot my water bottle in the car. (My wife had hers so we kept going)
I had my filter so we stopped along the trail and filtered in a little creek.
