The NHL is following the MLB, NBA, WNBA and MLS' lead ... with the league officially postponing games following the Jacob Blake shooting.
"After much discussion, NHL Players believe that the best course of action would be to take a step back and not play tonights and tomorrows games as scheduled," the league announced Thursday.
The decision comes after several players -- including Matt Dumba and Evander Kane -- criticized the league's response to the boycotts sweeping the sports world.
The NHL says they support the players' wishes ... and will make up the games starting Saturday.
NHL continued ... "Black and Brown communities continue to face real, painful experiences. The NHL and NHLPA recognize that much work remains to be done before we can play an appropriate role in a discussion centered on diversity, inclusion and social justice.
As we previously reported ... the NBA kickstarted a massive movement on Wednesday after the Milwaukee Bucks elected to stay in the locker rooms in protest ... and have since agreed to continue the season.
"We understand that the tragedies involving Jacob Blake, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others require us to recognize this moment," the NHL added.
"We pledge to work to use our sport to influence positive change in society."
This brown girl spent big bucks as a Stars season ticket holder for years. T
I won’t be spending a dime on them any more. Almost ashamed to wear my Stars Winter Classic sweater now.
Only 10? You underestimate sports addiction. It's like a narcotic more potent than crack or meth.
Addicted conservatives will temporarily set aside their outrage to tune in or attend.
Done too.
You can take forever off you dips hits.
I won’t be watching anymore.
That just leaves rodeo.
Im eagerly awaiting the term, contraction, to become a regular topic in American professional sports. I anticipate the MLB will be the first league to disband teams, and it may happen as early as next year.
I also look forward to watching the players, owners and sports media go through the acceptance process, acceptance of the fact that the golden age of American professional sports has passed, and it is not coming back.
Yes, the Feral Government™ extorts these organizations via special anti-trust exemptions...
The hockey season hasn't even started.
This is the Death Knell for National Sports. People will gravitate to the local high schools, when Covid subsides. I will not be watching any type of game on TV anymore. The teams dont respect the fans, the fans are walking away.
I think it might be a good year to cancel all professional sports and let them go a year without pay. Would not bother me at all. In the mean time, encourage college sports to the hilt, except make a rule that whoever doesn’t play because of a personal proest should lose their schloarship.
Now Im mad.
I know, its all virtue signaling. Basically they refuse to play Thursday but I have no problem playing on Saturday night. Its not like it caused any major disruption with tens of thousands of fans showed up for a game that never got played as you are playing in empty stadiums and arenas now.
The only reason I knew these teams were playing, besides the MLB, is Win news broke of them not playing
Walk away from corporate sports.
Supporting a group that burns flags and BIBLES. Sorry, Jesus means more to me than any silly sport.
Great. My last sport.
F*** the NHL. Go back to your “playoff”. Just crown a victor and screw the season. Assholes all.
Um, I believe it has. They are already into the "playoffs".
Good luck with that.
The one league that had acted responsibly just blew it. I’m sure it’s pressure from the clowns at NBC. They may experience real backlash for supporting folks that want to destroy the segment of society that pays the freight for the NHL. Sad really, a marketing disaster.
Can’t believe how much I’m getting accomplished without watching millionaires taking a knee.
