Americans can't stop shoving pizza into their faces
CNN ^ | Tue August 25, 2020 | Jordan Valinsky

America's pandemic-induced love affair with pizza shows no signs of slowing down.

That's a huge relief for Papa John's, helping to speed up its turnaround plans. The pizza chain said Tuesday that its North American sales rose 24% over the past four weeks. Internationally, sales were also strong, jumping 23% for the period.

Pizza has thrived as other restaurants struggle mightily during the coronavirus pandemic. Pizza has been synonymous with delivery for decades, which is crucial when people are afraid or barred from eating inside restaurants. And it's cheap -- helpful during the worst recession since the Great Depression.

"Papa John's numbers demonstrate that value and convenience is likely to be a powerful combination even a post-pandemic environment," Morningstar analyst R.J. Hottovy told CNN Business.

What’s the difference? Cheese taste? Pizza texture?

The pizza in Italy all had thin crust and was baked in brick ovens. They serve one and are about the size of an LP record. The bottom was salty, and the tomato was very tasty.

I just scrape off and enjoy the cheese, sauce and toppings and leave the crust behind. But not in public.

Make your own and it’s not expensive. And it tastes so much better...

That’s for sure. And it’s so easy. Mix up a little dough, wait an hour, roll it out, add your favorite sauce, and whatever toppings you like, cover with cheese and bake in the hottest oven your stove will allow. With my old 1950’s Kenmore gas range and a burning hot pizza stone, it cooks in 8 minutes! Deeeelish!

Actually, anywhere you have real Italian mom and pop pizzerias, you can usually get a good pie. I grew up in northern Illinois, and we had lots of places that made great pizza. My favorite is made with sweet Italian sausage. The crust, the sauce and the Italian sausage, or whatever toppings you like, have to be just right. Especially the crust and sauce!

I agree. I like a thin crust and a saucy pizza!

So true. My favorite places to go in Italy were Pizza al Metro and Pizza D’Angelo.

We were at a Milan pizzeria and had something called Shaq-a-roni. It was for a limited time so that was pretty awesome...they sliced it in squares.

I’m not a pizza lover but we have a local chain owned by a firefighter friend that makes the best pizza. Every once in awhile I get hungry for Tony’s Pizza. And no, it is not cheap. But it is definitely a meal.

Let us all know where Tony’s Pizza is so we can visit when we’re in town.

The best pizza is genuine Italian pizza. I’ve been to Italy several times and even the best pizza I’ve had in the States doesn’t hold a candle to what they make over there.

It is not just the pizza over there, but all Italian food. Even when one uses imported ingredients and an authentic recipe, it just doesn't taste the same.
