My levels are very low. At the bottom of the “good” level. I am lucky in this case.
We still don’t really “get” cholesterol. We used to think it was all bad, then we figured some was good and some is bad, but we’re still heavily focused on dietary even though the vast majority of cholesterol in your body is made by your body. And we haven’t really asked if your body is making cholesterol is it actually bad? I mean yeah buildup and clogged arteries are bad, but does one actually lead to the other? And of course statins tend to eat your muscles, including your heart, so is that actually improving your heart health?
Get exercise. Stick to non-statin stuff like fish oil or ginger. And hope for the best.
Have we been sold a bill of goods? Quite possibly.
How about an even a bigger con job than Covid 19 and wearing masks.
My Mother and MIL lived into their mid or high 80’s with high levels of killer C.
I have had killer C levels until last fall, and now it is normal. I will be 82 at election time. I walk and stretch.
My wife is 80 with killer C levels and HDL levels like a top athlete. She walks and does stretching exercises.
My wife is a great non professional chef. We live on a low carb diet that is basically the Mediterranean way.
Our Breakfast has smoked salmon and cheese fresh fruit/veggies. Lunch is often leftovers from dinner the nite before.
Dinner runs from salmon or some ocean fish/seafood a couple times a week, to grilled chicken, lamb one night and steak one night, and boneless pork loin. Hamburgers about 2X per month.
In the summertime, she prepares a salad with diced meat or seafood or I grill something for the salad.
In the winter, we have soups from scratch or her cookie sheet/parchment paper with the protein and veggies cooked in the oven at 450 degrees for about 30 minutes.
I fix omelets about 2x a month for dinner and leftovers for breakfast the next day.
Our weight has been basically the same over the years.
Our siblings are in their late 70’s and active. Their killer C levels are higher than ours. They are evolving into our diet styles and still do a fast food about once a week and steak once a week. Bacon and eggs are their breakfast most mornings.
Their FP/IM docs can’t believe that they haven’t died from Killer High C levels. My wife’s bros are like her with great HDL levels. Her younger brother still fits into his Army dress blues from the Nam area and plays tennis doubles a couple of times per week. Their sitting pulse rates are a little higher than cadavers.
It is obvious that their DNA and life styles don’t need to worry about eating real food.

Not a single one of my doctors has ever addressed diet except one endochrinologist who is no longer a member of the clinics I go to.
He told me that the problem with cholesterol had nothing to do with eating fats and had everything to do with starches/sugars.
I’ve consistantly resisted cholesterol drugs and they keep trying to push them on me. Yet none of these drug pushers has ever suggested anything to do with getting healthy. It’s a foriegn concept when your religion is better health by chemistry.
One day I mentioned the keto diet and the strong negative reaction was immediate. “Oh no! We never reccomend that for diabetics!”
Yet diabetis and metabolic syndrome is what is causing the health problems. And some medicines drive up the blood sugar in order to protect against heart attack. Some also destroy kidneys and liver.

Statins have side effects, which are documented in numerous studies and which affect some people more than other. What statins do well is reduce bad cholesterol.
As with any drug, the patient and his doctor need to discuss its benefits and risks. Ultimately, the patient needs to make an informed decision and decide what's best for him.

Web MD isn’t a website for cutting edge information on drugs or diet. They parrot the government line.
My fp finally gave up on getting me to do the statin thing and I had some severe weight gain after a serious foot surgery.
I lost about 35 pounds in a few months with the caveman/Paleo diet.
He and my wife who didn’t need to lose weight worked on the Med diet for both of us.
He had us throw away any of the so called substitute foods like oleo, and buying real food. After we cleared out the substitute foods, he told us to throw out and never buy any any food with multiple chemicals or whatever. We did that.
His next thing was how to shop in a grocery store. Only buy items from around the outer edges and nothing prepared, in a can or package. So basically we, shopped in only the produce, meat and cheese/milk sections and fresh bakery items.
Again, he said to buy and eat real butter, eggs, seafood and meat. We had a good farmer’s market and became friends with a former Thai now local family with all types of fresh fruit and veggies. They did so well, they quit going to the farmer’s market and opened their own stand open from spring to about Thanksgiving. Now, they have several farms, they rent or own to grow their fresh produce. We shop there about 2-3 times per week.
When I/we gave up most carbs, my wife wanted to snack on something. She came up with putting the fresh fruit/veggies on the first counter top when you go into our kitchen. Since then she has added her nut mix, walnuts and almonds. So we grab a handful of her nut mix instead of carbs.
I couldnt care less what my cholesterol level is.
Good food, and prepared to eat and enjoy.

Next you are going to tell me we don’t need all those drugs for the kiddies with Attention Deficient Disorder
There’s money in them there drugs!
Step one: Raise awareness with a plague of what appear to be public information spots. “Do you have non-24” Do this for a couple of months.
Step two: Get the sales people out and make the doc rounds to raise awareness and hand out a few free samples
Step Three: Start the ad campaign now that the pubic know what non-24 is and why they should be concerned about it. Include the virtue signaling notation that “if you can’t afford your drugs call this number for help.” “We’re good guys.”
Step Four: Time is wasting, that patent will run out so make hay while the sun is shining. Continue Steps Two and Three.
Wash, rinse and repeat. Create a drug and then promote the problem to use it on.
I have had high cholesterol since my 20s. I’m blessed with good genes to prevent plaque but not high blood pressure. Docs have been pushing statins on me for as long as they have been available and I have refused on the basis of reading the side effects, cautions and a clean as a whistle angiogram. Happy that I refused.
I’m not in the habit of swallowing a chemistry set just because some big pharma managed to get the clinical norms changed or created a problem for their new proprietary drug to solve.
The Crestor study is really flawed. The doctors involved all had a financial interest in doing the study, and the numbers in the results were massaged and tweaked until they were bruised.
Same here. Ditto for Dr. Nortin Hadler who wrote several books on the subject of how Americans have too many tests and take too many pills with little regard for the risks vs benefits. He won’t let anyone test his cholesterol until they can prove there is a good reason for doing so.
If you are approaching the senior years, I highly recommend his book Rethinking Aging: Growing Old and Living Well in an Overtreated Society. His other books like Worried Sick and The Last Well Person are also good.
Yes, that’s almost criminal the way they drug these kids, especially active boys.
The key to heart disease is inflammation. This is is mostly caused by too much sugar in the diet. Cholesterol is doing its job, sealing over inflammation.
