The association works to reduce these waiting times mixing swimmers and other techniques, so the allocation of dates depends to a large extent on the flexibility of the swimmers.

I got thinking about this because of the metal detecting coin find topic, which naturally made me think of a story I'd heard from an English-born guy who paid for his vacation in Gibraltar by free-diving for lost Rolexes off Gibraltar (he was also a metal detectorist, and a little shady). And the video linked below contributed to the idea for this topic, which is really a connection with prehistoric navigation.

The shortest distance across the strait is nearly 8 miles, so swimmers better be in peak physical condition.
My brother and I swam across Hood Canal in Washington state for our Boy Scout mile swim patch back in 1966 - Dad accompanied us in a rowboat just in case.
