The shortest distance across the strait is nearly 8 miles, so swimmers better be in peak physical condition.
My brother and I swam across Hood Canal in Washington state for our Boy Scout mile swim patch back in 1966 - Dad accompanied us in a rowboat just in case.

Step 1. Know how to swim.
Step 2. Swim.
Step 3. While swimming, don’t get ran over by a ship or boat.
Step 4. While swimming, don’t get eaten by a shark.
Step 5. While swimming, don’t drown.
Step 6. While swimming, aim for other side of the strait.
Step 7. Swim all the way to other side of strait.
Suggestion: Try to swim to other side of strait, straight.

Thats a really interesting website. I love how it says - if you swim only 2 KM/H, you will not make it!

It’s only a matter of time before the gays of Gibraltar demand to be included.

I suppose we should work out why for ourselves?

It is one of my favorite James Bond movies... The movie starts in Gibraltar... A bunch of MI-6 agents are in a war game...They parachute into Gibraltar... An assassin shows up and starts killing British agents...Then James Bond sees the assassin... It is a memorable pre-title sequence...
