Statins are not particularly effective at reducing the risk of dying from heart disease, a study claims.
Scientists analysed 35 studies into the effects of the drugs which lower 'bad' LDL cholesterol and found the pills have no consistent benefit.
The research, published in the British Medical Journal, found three quarters of all trials reported no reduction in mortality among those who took the drugs.
And half of all studies suggested that cholesterol-busting pills did not prevent heart attacks or strokes.
The research flies in the face of decades of medical advice. Authors claimed doctors have overlooked evidence that suggests statins, which are routinely prescribed to people at risk of heart disease, are not effective.
Around 8million people in Britain and 35million in the US take statins. They are thought to prevent heart attacks and strokes by lowering levels of LDL cholesterol in the blood.
Statins are routinely prescribed to people thought to be at risk of heart disease, including those with diabetes, high blood pressure and over-75s.

Perhaps the biggest Big Pharma fraud of all time.
On the other hand, they might be helpful for covid patients.
Statins darn near killed me. And the doctor got mad at me when I stopped taking them. Got a new doctor.
Hmm...I’ve been a-wonderin about that for a while.
Next up... Diabetes drugs.
Statins have consistently lowered my cholesterol levels to acceptable for over 20 years.
So if I’m still at risk of heart disease, then low cholesterol levels have nothing to do with that risk?
It that what they are trying to tell us?
Bull Cheese.
Are they talking about statins, or something else?
I fought hard to stop our doctor from giving my wife statins. Anti and pro website MDs have conflicting evidence.
Doctor isn’t 100 years old but she gets stuck in some beliefs.
One technical and important point: The wonder drug features of statins were found in results of test studies on males only. Women had no studies shown to help them, but doctors said “people” were helped. Finally a rather recent one showed help for women, too. But now controversial.
Statins can cause brain fog, pains in legs, destruction of muscles and, yes, the heart is a muscle so it harms, not helps the heart in the long run.
My doc prescribed them for me and when I found out it was lipotor, I refused to take them as that almost killed my mom and had very bad effect on my best friend. I was surprised he didn’t push the issue. I’m now taking garliq and ginger every day. I trust that more...lol. Get tested again in about 2 months so we’ll see...
Yes I wonder about that too. My wife is on metformin. She is told it is the only drug that will work but it scares the hell out of me.
My heart doctor didn’t even worry about cholesterol...... said it has no effect on the heart
Plus a lot of Drs don’t even tell their patients on statins to take CoQ10 to help prevent mitochondrial dysfunction affecting the muscles.
Eat (old fashion) Oatmeal every morning. It is great with fruit, raisins, cran-raisins, prunes, pecans, dried apricots, breakfast sausage.
It actually works. (instant oatmeal is awful)
i stopped taking mine because of muscle and bone pain all over..
last year my labs were very good.
Yes, metformin is an awful drug and far to over prescribed.
Here’s a thought: maybe staying in shape with regular exercise, and avoiding stress as much as possible, might prevent heart attacks much better than any drug cocktail you could consume?
In the meantime the doctors, research scientists and barber surgeons do what they can ...
Garlic, olive oil, fish, and mushrooms....
Vitamin C works better for many people.
