Tech Help Please!
I keep getting kicked off of the internet on my desktop computer, my router and modem are functioning properly, as I have my Roku TV on too and it doesn't ever skip a beat.
The computer is a year old refurbished Dell I bought from Amazon, super fast, with Win 10 and I'm running the Brave browser.
It didn't come with a WiFi adapter so I bought a TP-Link USB Wifi Adapter, (single band), for PC N150 Wireless Network Adapter for Desktop and it worked fine for about 6 months and then I started getting internet cut-offs, sometimes briefly and sometimes longer, it would just kick-out and then eventually come back on, very frustrating.
Well, screw it, thought the WiFi adapter went bad so I bought another of the same and it worked for about 60-90 days and it started kicking me off too.
So, I installed another brand of Wifi adapter a few days ago and the kick-offs happened immediately and frequently, very frustrating.
Disclaimer: I am not tech savvy at all but I'm starting to think that the whole problem lies with the notorious Win 10 updates that happen almost monthly, and I've read they cause many problems of their own.
Your input to fix this problem is greatly appreciated.
I'm computer support for my next-door neighbors.
They've had issues with several Win 10 update packages over the last couple of years.
Recommendations for a tech-idiot?
What’s your budget? Do you want a desktop or a laptop?
You’ll want to get the ear of dayglored...
I prefer a desktop, don’t want to spend more than $500
“restore to an earlier time when you bought it. Then stop the updates. period.”
You cannot stop Windows Updates on a Windows 10 Home PC, and may not be able to stop them on Win10 Pro, anymore. Saw something to that effect recently. Cheapest and easiest thing to do is update the driver for the WiFi adapter. That may fix it. You could also try changing the Wifi channels the modem and adapter use, or move your computer closer to the Modem. Poor signal strength can be the cause of Wifi problems, as can too many WiFi signals on the same channel you’re using. If not, try a different WiFi adapter. Preferably a different manufacturer if you go with the new adapter. And good luck!
...Mom?
Kidding.
My mom was saying she has no WiFi today. She was going to call AT&T about it. I wonder if this is a larger problem.
I'll agree with this.
Ofttimes, the user doesn't even know what they're paying for, however.
Look up how to change the channel on your router. It works. People around you buy a new router and use the default channel. A couple of users on the same channel should be OK but when more people join the club connections become sporadic.
So get away from the default channel and the couple of other channels they recommend because other router owners might go to those too. I had this problem years ago. Switched to the alternate channels and it worked for a while but then the connection problem came back. I just picked a channel not on the list and have had no connection problems at all for years.
There are some very good recommendations from Old Student here.
I myself would go with the Ethernet drop from the WiFi modem.
Excellent post.
You could be competing with your neighbors for your wireless frequencies.
You have a N adapter. Does your router support AC?
“I prefer a desktop”
Why? For 4 to 5 hundred dollars you can buy a decent laptop that is far more convenient than a desktop.
Try another browser as a backup. I have Firefox, Chrome, and an MS browser on all my systems.
The problem could be the Brave browser interacting with the network stack.
BTW: I am a computer professional. I have been a project lead on a web site development project. I have also taught tutorials on network protocols at an I.E.E.E. conference.
I prefer a desktop because I have old eyes and a 24’+ HD monitor works best for me.
MS keeps trying to sell me on Edge, is that a good browser?
I forgot to ask. Do these problems show up worse at different times of day more than others? If they do it’s very likely it is the channel. Do not buy or download a program to change the channel. You should be able to change it yourself.

Has your provider been doing any work to “improve your service?”
We fall under xfinity and they did some work in the area and for weeks we had been having the wifi go off without reason or forewarning and it would slowly get itself back on after about 10 minutes after it is unplugged and rebutted.
We called the company after days of this, as it cut out our recordings and watching shows about a dozen times a day while it rebutted itself back into service. They gave me a $30 rebate and gave others that were not as nice as I was a $50 rebate. It took a couple of weeks, but they finally got it working. In other words, it wasn’t broke, so they fixed it. Call them and blame them. They are probably responsible for it and didn’t tell you they improved it.

Microwave can interfere. Are you cooking when you lose the network?
