You could check the Power Saving Mode setting under Wireless Adapter Settings. Sometimes that can be a problem. Make sure it’s not shutting off on battery power.

Okay. I understand but, you can increase the size of the font on any PC by simply pressing CNTL and the + key. Likewise, you can decrease the font size by pressing the CNTL key and the - key. The size of the monitor does not increase the size of the font.

You have a “N” adapter. Does your router support “AC?”

You are speaking way above my area of knowledge.

I have Spectrum internet service at 100MBPS, it’s really fast and uninterrupted.

Thanks for your expert advice but I prefer the large HD monitor for youtube videos, etc.

Same here. . . .I was just sent a new modem and now the internet is going on and off. I think I was compromised with the old one. I am going to contact my provider again on Monday.

If you have to have the USB approach and you don’t want one with extra antennas standing up from it, this is the USB WiFi option that directly provides the maximum capability for your computer and router combination.

https://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Wireless-Adapter-Supports-TEW-808UBM/dp/B07C2ZKYSD

You will want to log into your router to make sure it’s using all of its frequencies for this adapter, but it might auto configure.

Your N card is stuck on heavily abused lower frequencies and it has no where to move to without interference from neighbors on all sides.

How??

I’ve disabled the updates every which way but loose...and they STILL install of their own volition.

I only use the MS browsers because my company has HR software that doesn’t work on anything else.

You may be getting some wifi channel interference from your neighbors. for some reason, most home routers like to default to channel 6. Go into the configuration in your wifi router and pick another one like channel 2.

There are power settings that allow Windows 10 to turn off your wireless and/or USB devices. Could also be a driver. It would be tough to show you details on how to fix this via FB. But your best bet is to buy a cheaper laptop (with an HDMI port). There is no real advantage to getting a desktop now unless you are into gaming and need lots of room for a powerful graphics card. Desktops aren’t really cheaper now. The laptop will work find if both monitor and laptop have HDMI connections. Also get an external mouse and keyboard combo (they are cheap) if you don’t like typing on laptop keyboards and hate laptop touch pads ... which I hate.

Understood. When you say HD monitor at your price point I assume your talking 720P for a desktop system. Not 1080P is this correct?

“I myself would go with the Ethernet drop from the WiFi modem.”

If you’ve got an ethernet drop, that would be the best and fastest way to get internet. Only things I use WiFi for are tablets and phones. All the desk & laptop computers use WiFi. You can get a LOT farther away before you need to worry about signal strength or interference. I just picked up an 8-port gigabit switch from Amazon for well under $20 delivered. You’d only need something like that if you’ve only one ethernet port on the modem, and it’s already tied up. I’ve got multiple computers and printers scattered all over the house.

There is a WiFi adapter out there that hangs up all the time on Windows 10. With Win 7, it runs just fine. IIRC, it had something to do with the WiFi chipset they used. Luckily for me, I had to hardwire my network due to throughput problems with WiFi and one of our programs. So my problem solved itself right away.

However, one of our Win 10 PCs could not be hardwired, as it is in an area of our building that won’t let me do it. I finally had to buy another WiFi card for it, disable the one built-in on the motherboard, and the new card has been steady as a rock ever since.

Not near the network now, so I can’t pull up the hardware information and tell you, but it was a popular chipset about 2 or 3 years ago, just as Win 10 was coming out.

“I prefer a desktop because I have old eyes and a 24’+ HD monitor works best for me.”

32” television here. Same reason you have the 24”. Wife has two 43” monitors on hers. She thinks I’m good looking. Her and my mom are the only ones to ever tell me that. Now that I buy her glasses, I know why. ;)
