Good 70's tune.
EVERY woman in her late twenties that bought into the ‘feminist ideal’ has to make a choice - a husband and a family, or a cat. This song explains that PERFECTLY.
Elliot Randall on lead solo.
Fun fact: Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page said Randall’s solo on “Reelin’ in the Years” is his favorite guitar solo of all-time.
Which one? In the beginning, the middle or the end? Or all three?
Every single song is a good one. I don't think Steely Dan ever put out a bad song.
Throw into that playlist Donald Fagen's "Nightfly" as well.
Can't go wrong!
IIRC, the lead throughout the song including the intro and middle break.
It was the first SteelyDan (aka “Fagen/Becker”) venture into hiring highly qualified studio musicians...a pattern that increased exponentially with each album.
It's not bad, but Larry Carlton's solo on Kid Charlemagne is better.
Also, the guitar solos on Bodhisattva — either the live or in studio — are awesome. Denny Dias and Jeff (Skunk) Baxter.
Becker had a good album, too.
Saw them in B’ham, UK in the 90’s in an arena. 2nd row center seats for my birthday. It was fab!
I like Terry Kath’s on 25 or 6 to 4.
The things you think are precious, I don’t understand.
I decline to walk the line,
They tell me that I’m lazy...
Worldly-wise I realize,
that everybody’s crazy.
I can imagine Page liking that one. It’s kind of right up his alley style wise. In fact, now that I think about it, it reminds me a little bit of Page’s solo on Fool In the Rain.
I can understand why. Its fantastic work.

New Frontier is my favorite.

Never liked Steely Dan. Boring. But when Reelin’ In The Years comes on the volume goes to 11.
Larry Carlton’s solo on Kid Charlemagne is really good...but his solo on “Don’t Take Me Alive” is even better.
Then there’s Rick Derringer’s solo on “Chain Lightning” and his hot slide on “ShowBizKids”.
But the absolute best guitar lead is Drew Zingg’s solo on “Pretzel Logic” done live during Fagen’s “Rock & Soul Revue” - freakin’ unbelievable!
Poor video quality but you’ll get the idea of DZ’s amazing guitar licks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt2zKrx0iYE
Another great one is Denny Dias’s on Do It Again. If he improvised it on the spot as rumored, then he deserves a medal. Plus that great faux sitar tone.
Baxter’s closng solo on Bodhisattva has them all beat.
Steve Gadd on the title track of “Aja” is one of the greatest drum performances ever.
My son had a college interview at William & Mary last fall. On the drive to campus from the airport, I popped My Old School into the player.
He had never noticed or heard of the song before. He asked I play it over and over again on the way to campus.
He said it psyched him up for the interview.
It must have worked...we take him to start his freshman year at William & Mary a week from Monday!
Looking forward to listening to it again and again all the way there!!
