EVERY woman in her late twenties that bought into the ‘feminist ideal’ has to make a choice - a husband and a family, or a cat. This song explains that PERFECTLY.

Elliot Randall on lead solo.

Fun fact: Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page said Randall’s solo on “Reelin’ in the Years” is his favorite guitar solo of all-time.

Put the entire Steely Dan catalog in a playlist and just hit SHUFFLE.

Every single song is a good one. I don't think Steely Dan ever put out a bad song.

Throw into that playlist Donald Fagen's "Nightfly" as well.

Can't go wrong!

The things you think are precious, I don’t understand.

Never liked Steely Dan. Boring. But when Reelin’ In The Years comes on the volume goes to 11.

My son had a college interview at William & Mary last fall. On the drive to campus from the airport, I popped My Old School into the player.

He had never noticed or heard of the song before. He asked I play it over and over again on the way to campus.

He said it psyched him up for the interview.

It must have worked...we take him to start his freshman year at William & Mary a week from Monday!

Looking forward to listening to it again and again all the way there!!

Your everlasting summer
You can see it fading fast
So you grab a piece of something
That you think is gonna last
But you wouldn’t know a diamond
If you held it in your hand
The things you think are precious
I can’t understand

Are you reelin’ in the years
Stowin’ away the time
Are you gatherin’ up the tears
Have you had enough of mine

Are you reelin’ in the years
Stowin’ away the time
Are you gatherin’ up the tears
Have you had enough of mine

You been tellin’ me you’re a genius
Since you were seventeen
In all the time I’ve known you
I still don’t know what you mean
The weekend at the college
Didn’t turn out like you planned
The things that pass for knowledge
I can’t understand

Are you reelin’ in the years
Stowin’ away the time
Are you gatherin’ up the tears
Have you had enough of mine

Are you reelin’ in the years
Stowin’ away the time
Are you gatherin’ up the tears
Have you had enough of mine

I spend a lot of money
And I spent a lot of time
The trip we made in Hollywood
Is etched upon my mind
After all the things we’ve done and seen
You find another man
The things you think are useless
I can’t understand

Are you reelin’ in the years
Stowin’ away the time
Are you gatherin’ up the tears
Have you had enough of mine

Are you reelin’ in the years
Stowin’ away the time
Are you gatherin’ up the tears
Have you had enough of mine

I love the lyrics to this song. “You’ve been telling me you were a genius since you were seventeen. In all the time I’ve known you, I still don’t know what you mean,” (ouch!!) “Well the weekend at the college didn’t turn out like you planned,” (oh, tried to get a rich boy via sex, did she? Heh...)

Great tune. The whole album, “Can’t Buy a Thrill” triggers many good memories.

I fell in love with the Dan the first time I heard them and still do.

48 years since the song was released. 1972 was the year that Biden was first elected to the Senate. At least the song has given enjoyment to many people, whereas Biden has contributed absolutely nothing of value.
