On 6 June 1944, the Allies launched the greatest amphibious invasion in history. Codenamed “Overlord” but best known today as “D-Day”, the operation saw Allied forces landing on the beaches of Normandy in Nazi-occupied France in huge numbers. By the end of the day, the Allies had established a foothold on the French coastline.

The statistics for the invasion force involved in the operation are staggering. By midnight on 6 June, 132,000 Allied forces had landed in France, while more than 2 million were eventually shipped there in total, comprising a total of 39 divisions.

Thousands of vessels took part in the operation, including 139 major warships; 221 smaller combat vessels; more than 1000 minesweepers and auxiliary vessels; 4,000 landing craft; 805 merchant ships; 59 blockships; and 300 miscellaneous small craft.

The German soldiers were up on a hill as our troops came off the boats at Normandy.. killing all American troops they could.. and the troops knew what awaited them as they got off the boats... nevertheless... they came and died...

where are we today?

We lost half of the troops.... coming off the boats.. each load walked over the dead, hoping they would make it...

today, what I see in these cities... it’s a shame they didn’t face death on foreign land...to appreciate today.

I really wish more people would read more history, particularly military history. If they did perhaps they would better understand the sacrifices made for us, so we could have what we have today.

I believe then people would be less likely to throw the gift of freedom at the feet of a virus.

There is absolutely no question that the heroism, bravery, abilities and accomplishments by American soldiers who were mostly civilians not long before has been recorded forever and the world owes them a great debt. Yet it should never be forgotten that by June 1944, the equally heroic and tenacious fighting done by the Russians despite huge political, logistical and military obstacles destroyed and killed off the best of the German army. If the Russians had not been so tenacious and stout, many Americans would not exist today, since since their fathers and grandfathers would not have returned home.

Yes... and I lose my patience with the youthful who have no regards for the price paid for their great country, which they are eager to pass on to the likes of biden .. it can’t survive their riots and hate. the blood paid for their right to be foolish... their lack of respect and absolutely no knowledge and no caring for what we are.

My father and all his brothers played craps with their young lives (voluntarily) so these unelected jerks could play God with MY life?

One difference, is that the Russians were fighting on their own soil, against an Enemy they were more than happy to help, until they were attacked themselves.

Don’t confuse admiration for the courage and fighting of Russian grunts with any tolerance for the vile communists who controlled Russia at the time. The Russian soldiers despite all fought for their homeland and repelled a brutal, modern war machine that was sent to its own destruction by vile, cruel and bizarre Nazis.

For the real history buffs, look up the practice landing at Dieppe.

There was also an instance where the Nazis got into another practice landing while they were at sea. Really awful.

Factoid: The British beaches were codenamed after fish; Sword, Gold and (originally) Jelly.

Churchill said he would be damned if would tell a mother her son died storming a beach named "Jellyfish" so they changed that to Juno.
