CARLSBAD, N.M. - Recently released videos from a body-camera worn by a National Park Ranger at Carlsbad Caverns National Park reveals the park visitor who he tased, then shot and killed did not provoke the use of force and was unarmed.
Charles Gage Lorentz was traveling from his work site in Pecos, Texas on March 21. 2020 intending to head to his familys home in Southwest Colorado. A report from the Eddy County Sheriffs Department noted that he detoured at Carlsbad Caverns National Park to meet a friend. The report states National Park Ranger Robert Mitchell stopped him for speeding on a dirt road near the Rattlesnake Springs area of the park.
The lapel video shows Ranger Mitchell ordered Lorentz to spread his feet and move closer to a railing. Lorentz is seen complying with those orders. But when the ranger orders Lorentz to turn around, Lorentz is seen in the video not complying and dancing to nearby music playing from someones vehicle. Ranger Mitchell commanded Lorentz to take his hands out of his pockets, and without warning or an announcement that force will be used; Ranger Mitchell deployed his Taser at Lorentz.
The video abruptly ends when the Taser is deployed. Twenty-six seconds of the video is missing, but when the video resumes, the video shows Ranger Mitchell on top of Lorentz. Thats when the ranger shot him twice with his service gun.

White guys cant dance is now systemic racism I guess.
Well yeah, 26 seconds of video are missing. The Rayshard (Atlanta) killing also went from friendly to dead in a hurry - for good reason.
I do note that police body cameras do tend to become...uninvolved at critical times. 26 missing seconds here, both cameras on ground during Rayshard arrest (surveillance cameras did hey what happened), etc.
Having lived in Chicago area for 37 years I had my run-ins with corrupt Chicago cops. But I was intelligent enough to never to disobey the cops. I got even with them in traffic court, where the judge was the boss, not the cop.
Did you go to the link and read. The guy did not comply with rangers orders to turn around, or to take his hands out of his pockets. He just kept saying no. Finally, ranger shot him with Taser, which couldn’t penetrate his coat. In line with protocol, ranger then approached the perp to apply Taser directly, as soon as the ranger stepped forward, the perp rushed him and attacked him which witnesses have verified. In the fight, the ranger almost got knocked out so before having his gun taken, he shot the perp twice. Good shoot to me, one less dirtbag.
He kept escalating the situation.
He is told to move. He doesn't.
He is told to turn around. He won't.
He is told to take his hands out of his pockets.
He doesn't.
All of those are danger signs to police.
He turned out not to have a weapon, other than personal weapons (his own body, hands and feet), but the officer could not know that.
It looks to me that is why he tased him.
Then he says the taser had no effect, and the physical fight started.
He is fighting with the guy when he shoots him.
When a person has engaged with an armed man in a physical fight, it becomes a fight for a deadly weapon.
The officer still did not know what the suspect might have had in his pockets.
Or the Ranger could have not been on some ego fueled dick trip, and just wrote him a ticket and let him be on his way in America, a supposed Free Republic.
Brevity = wit.
It’s from a TV station.
TV journalism always sucks.
You see better writing from a 5th grader.
Obviously the guy didn’t want a ticket. He wanted trouble.
So the cop should be a pussy and let him go?
Park ranger going to jail for life
He would not comply with what the officer told him to do.
The officer had no reason to believe he wouldn't just walk off, run off, get back in the vehicle and drive off, or attack the officer.
He was not being cooperative, so how was the officer supposed to write a ticket?
The officer could not just let him back into the vehicle, when he seemed likely to be impaired.
That would put the public at risk.
Good. Id wish video of every other normal person gets the same treatment.
Theres a reason cops wear a badge. Do what they tell you to do.
PS. Have a good high res camera on the front and REAR of your vehicle. And load it Automatically in real time to the cloud With access by your family..
Shut up. Ask for a lawyer from the next county/state over.
Yup. They are out there. Thank god our cops (here in town) are on the up and up.
If he wasnt on drugs, he did a great imitation of someone on drugs.
I don’t see what the guy did to be shot.
Apparently, he refused to “Respect my AUTHORITAY!” I’m pro-cop, but not pro-stupid, vindictive, or bullying cop.
The deceased’s toxicology screen showed that he was not on drugs. And the missing 26 seconds is *highly* suspicious.
WTH do park rangers need with tasers and firearms? Is there THAT much a need for such firepower? Isn’t their job primarily to give speeding tickets and tell people to put out their campfires and to not feed the wildlife?
Are you accusing me of longwindedness?
There were no drugs or alcohol in his system.
And if there were?
Shoot him dead?
Oh well, never second-guess one of our HEROES!
Like mall cops and lactation consultants.
“Free Republic” indeed.
