Many baseball players have a strong desire to play for the Yankees during their MLB careers. It's one of the most iconic franchises in sports, and they've rarely missed the playoffs since the mid-1990s. However, superstar Ken Griffey Jr. never had a desire to play for the Yankees -- even though his dad played for them. In the new MLB Network documentary "Junior," the Mariners legend explains why.
It all stems from an experience Griffey Jr. had while visiting his father, Ken Griffey Sr., in the early 1980s. Griffey Jr., just a kid at the time, was asked to leave the team dugout before a game.

hey simon-who cares?
“Ken Griffey Jr Reveals Why He Never Wanted to Play for The Yankees...”
He’s normal and didn’t want to be be in New York?
Simon says: Cry me a river.
I don’t think he ever worried about it as much as you do. Only ASS***** worry about stupid chit.
The evil empire.
Never was a fan of junior.
He was one of my heroes when he was in Seattle. After that he soured.
Holding a grudge can also be detrimental.
He could have given up millions and championships and 100 more home runs because he was butthurt.
A tremendous talent, loved that era of sluggers, Griffey. Mcgwire & Sosa.
I’ve never had a sports hero. I’ve liked some players, but never considered them heroes. On the other hand I have to admit that I always considered Neil Armstrong one of my heroes. I still remember when he walked on the moon.
Waiting for the U.S. Second Court of Appeals to back up Judge Rakoff’s decision to release a letter between the Commissioner and the Yankees that allegedly reveals they were sign-stealing using the video room in 2015 and 2016. The Yankees and MLB claim if the letter is made public, it will create “significant reputational harm” to the organization.
The background is that outfielder/DH Carlos Beltran was a Yankee player in 2015 and 2016 who signed with the Astros in 2017 to provide “veteran leadership”. Beltran then chides the Astros for being “light years” behind the Yankees in sign-stealing and starts to set up the infamous plan to use a live video signal to decode catcher signals.
Commissioner Manfred was aware of the Yankee roles in 2017 but covered it up because this was the biggest franchise in the sport and he had issued no directive against the practice. In September, he then fines the Red Sox and Yankees for stealing signs and warns if he hears of any more violations, he will punish them hard.
Then the Astros are exposed in the fall of 2019 and Manfred clobbers them with fines, suspensions and the loss of four draft picks. The Red Sox are then investigated for their sign-stealing and punishes them much less because the Red Sox lawyered up and denied there was any wrongdoing.
So will the Yankees have their delayed day of reckoning as “cheaters” or will Manfred continue to cover up for them?
For the record, I would be just as PO'd at them doing this as I am at the other teams implicated (Astros and Red Sux).
Cheating has no place in baseball. PERIOD.
Reveals?
Junior has been telling this story for years.
The irony is that Griffey Sr. was one of those players the Yankees had no business signing in the first place. He was way past his prime and played two positions outfield and first base where the team was stacked with talent.
Disclaimer: I AM indeed a life-long Yankees fan.
And Im sure you would like that they change their name because it triggers northerners.
Your namesake (Jimmy Foxx - Ol XX) never played for the Yankees either.
Hey, we got the class (Griffey) and you got the A$$ (Alex Rodriguez).
