Column: Why are so many people not wearing masks? Here's how they explain it
LA Times via MSN ^ | 6/17/20 | Steve Lopez

**SNIP**

Last week, Orange County’s public health director resigned after her call for mandatory face masks prompted a death threat, a security detail and a poster of her with a Hitler mustache and swastikas. On Tuesday in Santa Ana, face mask supporters were pushed and mocked by foes who chanted, “Hey hey, ho ho, these masks have got to go.”

**SNIP**

In Glendora, some of the people without face coverings were with relatives, and others were carrying masks in their pockets. But it wasn’t hard to find people who told me they didn’t buy into the argument that masks necessarily limit the spread of the coronavirus.

“It’s probably driven by political scare tactics,” said a 77-year-old retiree strolling with his wife, neither of them wearing masks. He added that he didn’t know anyone who has gotten COVID-19, but if reported cases are up, maybe it’s simply because there’s more testing rather than a worrisome surge.

**SNIP**

And then I came upon Robin and her daughter Natasha, both maskless. Robin said she likes to breathe in the fresh air on a nice day, and they cover up in stores, as required. But they weren't sold on the usefulness of masks. Natasha said even the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has contradicted itself on the matter.

No question, there’s still a lot to learn about the virus, and opinions on masks have varied. But for the record, the CDC currently “recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.”

In other words, it's dehumanizing.

Worth repeating.

I worked in moldy and really dusty zones, real respiratory hazards. It was hot and sweaty and I never removed the mask until I was out of the danger zone. Period. Plus I was using a genuine N95 or respirator unit to make sure I didn’t inhale dust, mold spores, etc.

I made it clear on my Facebook page that I will never show myself in a mask on my profile picture. It’s never normal, just an emergency.

The mask thing is a hoax.

Otherwise they would set a standard and why that works.

Everyone wears n95 because: *.*

Speaking of N95s, have you seen the pics of Mitt Romney wearing what looks to N95s.

I thought we were supposed to leave those for first responders and health care workers?

Why doesn’t Mitt practice what he preaches?

And how in heck is he getting them when they’re unavailable for sale to the general public?

”Anything short of an N95 is just theater. I wear one in stores to accomodate the mental health needs of the snowflakes.”

Ditto here, except mine is clearly not an N95. Keeps the busybodies away.

When this COVID mess started I was pretty amazed at how FAST (over night) all the billboards in ABQ up and down I-40 and I-25 had been changed from the normal ads to being cheerleaders for wear that mask! stay home! shop alone! flatten the curve!

Gee.. it’s almost as if someone had it planned or something... 🤔

Oh, I don’t have an N95. Mine is a streachy fabric one that I got off the internet. The more it streches, the bigger the pores. It won’t even stop dust, much less a virus.

I believe masks work in certain situations. There's a reason oncologists recommend certain people undergoing chemo wear them.

With that said, masks are not going to be as effective if people don't know how to donn/doff a mask properly. It's not as easy as out seems. But it's all a matter of percentages and probability anyways.

Ultimately, people do their own risk assessment on what steps to take to reduce the probability of catching COVID-19 and people catching COVID-19 with whom they are in close proximity (e.g. spouse, children in their house, etc.).

If not wearing a mask is a result of that assessment, we need to respect that just as someone deciding they will wear a mask.

If people get COVID-19 who don't wear a mask, we need to understand they made a decision and we need two accept that. I would not feel sorry for someone in such a situation (other than to get well!) - I would accept that person made an informed decision base don the information available to them. People will get COVID-19, most people who not even know it, someone people will get sick, some people will die. That's life. We all need to accept it, and motor on. And no whining!

Ultimately, we all need to get back to work.

Understandable. Please also take precautions that work. Get disposable masks and wear once then discard. Try not to touch the mask after you put it on. Wash your hands after removing the mask. Wash hands frequently throughout the day and avoid anyone who appears ill. Eat and sleep well.
I wish you and your family good health Some people like you have legitimate reasons to be more cautious.

from the link in # 93

It is also clear that masks serve symbolic roles. Masks are not only tools, they are also talismans that may help increase health care workers’ perceived sense of safety, well-being, and trust in their hospitals. Although such reactions may not be strictly logical, we are all subject to fear and anxiety, especially during times of crisis

For me wearing a mask is a sign of respect. It communicates more than words.

Like wearing a suit to an interview. It doesn’t mean you can do the job any better, it shows those you are meeting with that you respect their time.

Im really surprised to see so many “old conservatives” reject this notion.
