Republican senators rebelled against Donald Trump late Wednesday by voting to tell the Army to rename bases named after Confederate generals within the next three years.
The Armed Services Committee, whose members include Trump ultra-loyalist Tom Cotton, voted behind closed doors for the move, Roll Call first reported.
The voice vote was on an amendment to the annual Pentagon policy bill the Defense Authorization Act which was put forward by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat and former presidential candidate.
It came hours after Donald Trump tweeted furiously that he will not even consider renaming Forts Bragg, Hood, Lee and others.
The move puts the Republican senators on a collision course with Trump, who White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany suggested would veto any legislation which renamed the bases.

Most astute thing i've read on the internet in the last several weeks.
Yes, all this sh*t is the doing of the media which is totally under liberal control.
Our goal should have long been to smash liberal control of mass communications. This is the weapon that is currently doing so much damage, and we should either take it away and use it against them, or we should smash it so that they cannot use it either.
Without the media liars deliberately misinforming and gaslighting the public, none of this current crap would be happening.
The ironic thing here is that no one did more to overthrow slavery than Thomas Jefferson. Without his "all men are created equal", the forces of abolition would have never grown so quickly or so effectively.
He created the philosophical foundation from which all their efforts emerged. Slavery in Massachusetts was literally destroyed only through the agency of those five words.
Also, it's much easier to win when you have 5 to 1 manpower in your favor. It's rather embarrassing that it took so long to accomplish it.
“Are they going to change Fort Bragg to Fort Harvey Milk”
Shoot, they already named a US Navy ship after that pervert,
slavery has existed forever The US had slavery from 1789-1863. 74 years. I guess we didn’t move fast enough
Precisely.
Gen Milley should be gone. He’s the one who’s making this political.
That’s funny coming from you of all people!
You would think this is painfully obvious by now. Apparently not.
Lighthorse Harry, one of my ancestors. Second in command to General Washington.
They are not asking for reparation by this. They are asking for all the bend the knee to extortion, and sadly too many are happy to do so.
Your post 12 is a MUST-READ. You make a very good case, using history, for changing the names.
What is infuriating is that once again, the lying party of historical racism, MASSIVE CORRUPTION, and horror(Democrat party), is making this proposal only to cover up the racist statement of their presidential candidate "You aint black" Biden.
And it's just frustrating as hell to see the corrupt bast*rds get away with causing all this in the first place.
This would include our worthless media, with its - twisting facts, distorting images, or even using fake ones from movies, one sided reporting, and doing everything it can to cause even more anger and division.
They couldn't report a truthful story if their lives depended on it.
(BTW everyone-Check out George Webb Youtube channel. There is MUCH MORE to the George Floyd story than what the useless MSM is "reporting"-Hint: it's about corrupt cops and more.)
Add to this that it "appears" we have a DOJ that is all talk and no action, no arrests, not one, not even a Hollywood P. O. S., ("It takes time". "It's complicated". ..We know.), plus we have chaos in the streets (although it is Democrat party sponsored misery and people do need to wake up to what they voted for).
Anyway, IMO, you have made a well thought out case for changing the names of the bases, with the possible exception of Lee, who, some claim, was named for a person from the Revolutionary War. If so, this should be explained to people.
Just venting (Rant: Off)
1776 to 1865. The Northern "Union" states were the last to give it up.
I suspect someone must have your perspective to "get" the joke here.
The Civil War was an unfortunate tragedy, but calling the men who fought it on the South's side "traitors" shows a lack of understanding about how this nation was itself founded by asserting the principle that people had a right to independence if they so wished it.
Washington and company were "traitors" to the King at that time, but their system of laws did not allow "secession."
Ours asserted that it was a God given right.
I was referring specifically to your ludicrous and hypocritical excoriation of another FReeper about “seem(ing) over the top worked up about crap that happened 150 years ago”
Dude, you absolutely OBSESS over the WBTS! How many dozen posts PER DAY do you make on those threads? Now you are free to spam these pages - that’s not my call - but try to keep it real (for a change).
Some of my motivation is trolling. I like to get people going sometimes, and this is one of the subjects that it is easy to get people going on.
Also, I like to correct incorrect ideas when I see them, especially about the Civil War, because so much of what is wrong today is a consequence of that conflict.
As I have mentioned in the past, I started out in politics opposing abortion and efforts to push homosexuality onto the population. I regarded the attacks against Christianity in public places to also be a large part of the problem, and in the early days when I was studying the origins of decisions like "Roe v Wade" or "Lawrence v. Texas", they kept coming back to the "14th amendment", which was a consequence of the Civil War.
The societal damage caused by this easily misinterpreted amendment has been enormous, and the d@mn thing has been used as an excuse to justify every liberal attempt to force unpopular ideas onto the public against their will.
So yes, we are still feeling the bad consequences of the Civil War.
Wow - we agree on something. Yes, you are a troll.
As with the people who believe that "all men are created equal" are the only significant words in the Declaration of Independence, so too do you focus on a tiny little piece and assume that is the only significant thing being said.
"Wow" is right.
The shame is that you are not an intellectual midget. I've seen you write eloquently and with a significant grasp of higher principles involved, but you often choose to be just a heckler throwing tomatoes at the stage.
I'm not the only troll here.
Lees in Virginia likely go back to the 1600s.
Pretty much. The First Family of Virginia.
