Republican senators rebelled against Donald Trump late Wednesday by voting to tell the Army to rename bases named after Confederate generals within the next three years.
The Armed Services Committee, whose members include Trump ultra-loyalist Tom Cotton, voted behind closed doors for the move, Roll Call first reported.
The voice vote was on an amendment to the annual Pentagon policy bill the Defense Authorization Act which was put forward by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat and former presidential candidate.
It came hours after Donald Trump tweeted furiously that he will not even consider renaming Forts Bragg, Hood, Lee and others.
The move puts the Republican senators on a collision course with Trump, who White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany suggested would veto any legislation which renamed the bases.

Voice vote. Unrecorded. What a craven bowing down to racism and lies.
The vast majority still believe that.
We are in a Mediacracy, and revolting against it. That is what President Trump is doing.
The current fracus is not a revolt against the establishment. It is the establishment attempting to prevent the success of the Trumpian revolt.
OK, have some fun with them and rename them “Fort Trump”, Fort Trump II”, “Fort Trump III”, etc.
Missouri University in Columbia wants to remove the Thomas Jefferson statue from the quad. ... Black students want it gone because Jefferson had slaves. ...
I agree they should all be changed. (sarc)
“ Fort Donald Trump..”
“ Fort Donald Trump2”
“ Fort Donald Trump3”
There... fixed!
Seems the swamp beast is roiling to the surface.
LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!
I can’t believe this...
I JUST posted almost the identical thought before I read yours!
Maybe we are on to something!
Doesn’t matter. He’s white and therefore a racist. To remove the taint of original sin, it will have to burnt, razed and salt sown.
It’s only fair.
What helped to bring this about is the belief that the honor bestowed from naming forts after famous Confederate generals would be perpetual.
To take it away now is effectively asking the nation to break it's implied word that the designation was permanent.
Ha.... just saw that our posts were barely two minutes apart!!
How about Fort Stonewall? Tell them it is about the Stonewall riots.....
Fort Reagan
It’s amazing how often congress can pass resolutions and laws that are of no importance but can’t seem to get it together on important issues, even the ones Rs+Ds claim they agree upon.
The two parties should be working as one in a time of war right now, but they aren’t, still playing politics every day. The people be damned.
The left is learning that riots work. So expect more.
I will never take a knee...
If that happens republicans should demand that the statue of Robert Byrd be removed from the Capitol and his name taken off every building, after all he was a member of the KKK. If Lee and confederate soldiers were not able to be forgiven then Byrd cant either.
Oh, but to this breed of politician, anti-Constitutionalism and TDS are indeed “important issues” they agree on 100%.
