If you want on or off this list, please let me know.
What are they eating?
I have a really bad cat problem. If anyone who has cats can help me, I’d appreciate it very much.
One night last week, at 2AM, we were startled awake by the most awful, shrieking cat fight. When we got up and went to the living room, our two cats were in a standoff, growling, hissing, crying, and acting so viciously that we were afraid to get between them. Finally managed to isolate them, and I stayed up all night with one, while husband slept with the other.
This has never happened. They’ve had momentary spats; but they’re brothers, grew up together for the first 6-8 mos. of life in a shelter, and then we adopted them five years ago. They’ve never fought like this.
I didn’t sleep but two hours in 48, while they were all riled-up. Finally, they seemed to calm down - we had purchased a ‘pheromone’ thing that is supposed to synthesize a hormone that mother cats give out; but if it works, I don’t think it really had time to work - I think they just got tired, that night.
But tonight, it started happening again, and we are going through another night of cat separation.
I’ve never experienced this - and I’ve had cats, often numerous ones living together, all of my life. I can’t imagine what suddenly happened to them.
I’ve never had to give a cat away because of behavior or any other issue; but we may have to give away the cat that we believe is the ‘instigator’, if this keeps up.
There doesn’t seem to be any health problem with either cat. They are about five years old, and have been in excellent health, have never gone outdoors, and have always gotten along.
Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?
Thanks.
If you mean castrated, yes - when they were little things, before we even got them. And we’ve had them for five years, with no problem like this.
I had a cat once who lived for 20 years; but I figure these are pretty much ‘early-middle-aged’ now, as cats usually go.
We are going to take the ‘instigator’ to the vet, to see if there may be a problem that we can’t discern. He’s the smaller of the two, but thoroughly intimidates his larger, more peaceful brother.
And occasionally they just need a break from each other. When Calvin and Andre go at it I lock them in separate rooms for a day. They are always glad to see each other after that.
Someone suggested dribbling a little tuna water on their heads, they start to groom each other and forget they were fighting. Never tried it but it might work.
I wish the Tuna Water would work.
These are the first cats we’ve ever had who want nothing whatever to do with any ‘People Food’.
I’ve had cats who liked potato chips, shrimp, chicken, steak.
But these ones only like dried cat food and treat. The Instigator will eat canned wet cat food; but other than that, they don’t want anything to do with anything other than processed, dry cat food. I guess it’s how they were raised in the rescue outfit.
Just treats.
I wish I could give you a definitive answer. Could be the boys are getting sick of one another. Sometimes that happens. Might be something else setting them off.
How to change the behavior will require some consultation with an expert or vet.
IMO, sounds like the beta is tired of being beta. They'll calm down when the new pecking order is established.
Less likely, one of the cats has a hidden injury, and the other is unwittingly poking it.
I don’t know but these videos appear to be a family of cats with servants..........LOL!
That’s why the Korean family calls themselves “the Butlers.” :-P
Could one of them be sick? I had one brother attack a sister when she got too close. It ended up he was sick - cats are notorious for hiding illnesses or injuries - and I didn’t realize it, and sis got too close in his personal space. After he was better, he never did that again.
Beautiful cats. And lucky. I love to see animals that are loved and well- cared for.
Because they’ve become so popular on Youtube, many countless fans around the world send the cats gifts. They may be about the most pampered pets on the planet.
We’re concerned about that, so have made a vet appointment.
Thanks very much.
Thanks to you both, and to everyone who responded.
Actually, the one that seems to be causing the trouble has always been the rowdier one; but things never came to more than occasional, momentary blows.
We have a vet appointment later this week - the vets seem to be swamped due to covid, and we have to wait until Thursday. (Last night and today were a doozy, and I’m hoping we can last that long.)
But this came on so suddenly and inexplicably that we’re wondering if one is sick.
Thanks again.
Please let us know what the vet says.
I’ve been missing out then, this is my first encounter with them.
