On the morning of 30 June 1908, a large explosion occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Yeniseysk Governorate (now Krasnoyarsk Krai), Russia. That event is known as the Tunguska event that leveled trees across more than 2,000 square kilometers.
It is classified as an impact event, even though no impact crater has been found. Due to the remoteness of the site and the limited instrumentation available at the time of the event, modern scientific interpretations of its cause and magnitude have relied chiefly on damage assessments, and geological studies conducted many years after the fact.
The most likely cause is an airburst asteroid strike in which the asteroid explodes in the atmosphere, similar to the Chelyabinsk meteor strike in 2013. Given the size of the impact region, it's estimated that the original asteroid was nearly 70 meters across. This would explain why no large impact crater has been found.
Fragments of Chelyabinsk were discovered soon after the impact. But, in the case of the Tunguska event, there were no fragments. This causes several assumptions on the cause of events such as a massive leak of natural gas, or even the explosion of an alien spacecraft.
A new study shedding light on the event again, suggests that there are no fragments because the asteroid didn't fragment after all. Instead, it glanced off Earth's atmosphere.

I doubt there's anything to this -- the detonation of the object took place some distance above the surface (hence the "telegraph pole forest" at ground zero) as it disintegrated. Also, no study of the site took place for about twenty years after the impact. Ice melts, tiny bits get embedded in trees and the ground.

Captain....Obvious.
So we’re back to asteroid now. First it was an asteroid then a comet. My favorite explanation as Atlantean nuclear weapon!
The epicenter of the blast has be excavated but only many years ago. Wonder if Lidar would show anything? The angle of
strike must have been low enough that it didn’t penetrate
the atmosphere.
Interesting incident.
“This causes several assumptions on the cause of events such as a massive leak of natural gas”
They didn’t even have pipelines back then.
Minorities, women, children, and owls effected most...
They did have natural gas.
There was another event recently that hit Siberia. This one was caught on film multiple times. Even had one hit near me in Phoenix. There was a beautiful smoke trail visible that morning. It had me wondering what rocket base could have done that. As act of God was the furthest thing from my mind. It even made a noise that night which I attributed to noisy neighbours.
a massive release and explosion of permafrost or methane gas perhaps? or climate change .. its mysteries are so baffling..
Hasn’t this always been the assumption??
No. Some assumed crashed UFO. Even before the "It's aliens" guy came on the scene.
I’ve been staying awake nights worried about this. LOL
Thanks for the article Sunken Civ (and so many other good ones week in and week out).

*********
Tunguska is hella hard to get to, especially back in the day when it was pack mules and such. No one got there “soon after”. And no one stays long when they get there.
Tunguska area has a lot of swamp and bog. Stuff gets swallowed up by swamp and bog.
Just because someone official and certified hasn’t found something yet don’t mean it aint there to be found.
Everyone knows it was caused by Nikola Tesla sending a message to Admiral Robert Peary at the North Pole. Old timey death rays weren’t that stable.
So what they are saying is that it was like a stone skipping off the surface of the water. Seems it went awfully deep, but then who really knows...who really cares...
Fox Mulder says it's aliens, but since he's with the FBI he just makes $(@+ up.
Eventually, if the asteroid is still in orbit around the sun, it may be detected. Study and sample retrieval may then show physical and chemical signs of heating and melting indicative of a close call with Earth's atmosphere. Yet this will be many decades from now, if ever.
“Even before the “It’s aliens” guy came on the scene. “
Who just happens to be Russian, very interesting..........
