The last time the sun was this quiet, Earth experienced an ice age
9News ^ | 05/20/2020

The last time this occurred was between 1650 and 1715, during what's known as the Little Ice Age in Earth's Northern Hemisphere...

Scientists have known this solar minimum was coming because it's a regular aspect of the sun's cycle. Sunspots were peaking in 2014, with low points beginning in 2019, according to NASA.

The sun is also responsible for what's known as space weather, sending particles and cosmic rays streaming across our solar system. The sun's strongly magnetised sunspots release solar flares, which can send X-rays and ultraviolet radiation hurtling toward Earth.

Even when the sun is quiet during the solar minimum, it can be active in other ways, like coronal holes that open in the sun's atmosphere and send out blazing streams of energised particles flying through the solar system on rapid solar wind.

Much like solar flares, these streams of particles during a solar minimum can disrupt the communication and GPS we rely on from satellites.

"We see these holes throughout the solar cycle, but during solar minimum, they can last for a long time — six months or more."

More highly energetic particles called galactic cosmic rays can reach Earth, specifically its upper atmosphere, during a solar minimum. These are created by explosions across our Milky Way galaxy, like supernovae.

"During solar minimum, the sun's magnetic field weakens and provides less shielding from these cosmic rays," Mr Pesnell said.

"This can pose an increased threat to astronauts traveling through space."

This solar minimum ends solar cycle 24. Early predictions estimated the peak of solar cycle 25 will occur in July 2025, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The solar cycle forecast is based on a NOAA and NASA co-chaired international panel. They agree that solar cycle 25 will be similar to cycle 24.

A sure sign the chiviruse is winding down. Now we can worry about the ice age.

There will always be something for the children to panic over.

It doesn’t matter, to paraphrase Stalin - “It’s not the temperature reading that matters, it’s who reads the temperature”

So the Ice Sheets could be bearing down on Manhattan and they would still claim we are having the warmest year ever!!!

I predict that we will be told that 2020 was the warmest year ever recorded.

Wash, rinse, dry.

And 2021 will be reported as the warmest year ever recorded.

Trump's fault!! 😋

I'm confused, are we supposed to worry about global warming or an ice age? Shouldn't they get on the same page? 😋 **Yawnnnnn**

Well, first they sold Global Cooling, then Global Warming, and now Global Cooling again.

I would like to propose a new thing to become panicked about: GLOBAL NO-CHANGE-AT-ALL!

It will be the worst thing to hit humanity, ever.

Temperatures have been FALLING for 8,000 years

Short term variations, local record hots and colds, don’t mean much, that’s just weather. What matters is long term global trend lines over decades, centuries, millennia, eons, epochs.

Temperatures have been warmer than today for almost all of the past 10,000 years.

The cold weather may be influenced by the unprecedented number of volcanic eruptions in the world.

Though the overall modulation of solar output is modest, the UV output varies by about 15%, which does drive changes in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Oh no! Global No Change At All! That’s the worst! GNCAA....we’re all gonna die!

I don’t know why we listen to people who can’t even tell us for certain if it’s going to rain in a day or two.

Will cast a vote for the eruption of Campi Flegrei to end the Holocene warm period, to begin the next glacial ice period.

There's a very slight reduction in overall radiation, plus a slight shift towards the blue spectrum if I recall correctly.

However, the reduction in solar wind allows a much greater number of cosmic rays to hit the atmosphere, which acts like a giant cloud chamber. The theory is that the cosmic rays dramatically increase the amount of cloud cover, raising Earth's albedo and lowering surface temperatures significantly.

So that’s why it’s so cold in May. Naturally, the media will never mention the fact that the Sun is the major influence on weather and climate.
