This Shrub Is Quickly Becoming the Favorite Superfood of Doomsday Preppers
Vice ^ | April 6, 2015 | Max Cherney

Doomsday survivalists have over the years have earned a reputation for stockpiling medical supplies, guns and ammo—essentially gathering whatever resources and expertise necessary for self-sufficiency in the event of the apocalypse. That ethos has now drawn a group of survivalists that call themselves preppers to an unlikely superfood that's just beginning to take hold in North America: moringa.

Moringa Oleifera is an unassuming shrub that grows in hot, dry tropical climates around the globe, and is prized for its high level of nutrients—especially protein. "The biggest reason is because it is a great food source," David Wentworth, who publishes expertprepper.com, explained. "It is very easy to grow, grows quickly, is highly nutritious and every part of the plant can be used as food. Its also great for water purification. Also can be turned into oils, fertilizers and a healing aid."

The preppers also like moringa because it can do the job of several plants, saving both space, and the necessary resources to grow the plant. "Its the swiss army knife of the prepper garden," Wentworth said. They're also fond of other exotic plants such as Chia, because of its similarly useful nutritional content, and more common vegetables such as broccoli. The point is that the veggies provide the most nourishment while using the fewest resources to grow.

What? Can't smoke it as well? The blurb sounds like what the hemp/doper crowd goes on about.

I grow Texas Devil Horn plants.

Any food value in that?

Cows will eat the leaves mid August in drought years.

Grows much like a squash plant.

My wife and I are really starting to get into the whole perennial, edible landscape mindset, growing several varieties of fruit trees, blueberries, muscadine grapes, etc. It’s a fun and rewarding challenge. I just hope the zombies hold off until everything matures. When you take the plunge, you’re in it for the long haul.

The Truth About Moringa Oleifera

There are a lot of amazing claims about the moringa tree. From fighting cancer and fending off malnutrition, to purifying water and preventing infection, it’s almost too good to be true. Many sites calling it the “miracle tree” or the “tree of life”. Just type in “moringa cures” into a search engine and you’ll see hundreds of disease cure and prevention claims. While I think some medicinal claims may be unfounded, the overall value of the moringa oleifera tree would be difficult to discredit. It’s an amazing plant.

I’m over here in east AL and I can empathize. Except our nemesis is the damn tree rats. They raid the blueberry hedge and climb the fruit trees, then eat anything they can reach. Fortunately, not everything is fully mature yet. We’ve given up on trying to till and grow a garden plot for now and are doing container gardening for veggies - cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, we even found a variety of patio corn that grows in 2’ tubs and is delicious. I got a pack of container yellow summer squash I want to start this week and the gourds only get about 3” long.

Eat the deer.

The deer in Georgia are pathetic, little things. My wife's problem with Georgia gardening was the clay soil. Georgia's good for peanuts, pecans, peaches, pigs ... anything that begins with "p".
