Delta said it also expects the MD-90 aircraft, which are made by Boeing Co. BA, +0.84%subsidiary McDonnell Douglas, to exit its fleet in June. Boeing's stock fell 2.3% ahead of the open. Delta expects to record impairment charges of $1.4 billion to $1.7 billion as a result of the aircraft retirements. Delta said the 777 fleet included 18 aircraft. Chief Executive Ed Bastian said the decision was made as international travel is expected to return slowly. "[P]arking this fleet will provide significant cost savings over the next several years," Chief Executive Ed Bastian wrote in a memo to employees.

It was a great airplane...I loved the few times I traveled on it. What a ride!
“The Boeing 777X is the latest series of the long-range, wide-body, twin-engine Boeing 777 family from Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The 777X features new GE9X engines, new composite wings with folding wingtips, greater cabin width and seating capacity, and technologies from the Boeing 787. The 777X was launched in November 2013 with two variants: the 777-8 and the 777-9. The 777-8 provides seating for 384 passengers and has a range of 8,730 nmi (16,170 km) while the 777-9 has seating for 426 passengers and a range of over 7,285 nmi (13,500 km). The 777-9 first flew on January 25, 2020, with deliveries expected to commence in 2021. “
But in the future I won't make any exceptions. One reason why I don't fly JetBlue.
Are they going to replace them with 737 Max?
Triple 7s were nice planes. The updated DC-9s that Delta is getting rid of, not so much.
So, how difficult is it to modify these to add rotary launchers for long range cruise missiles? (Asking for a friend?)
I can live without the DC-9 or Mad dog 90. They were awful, loud, and miserable
The A380 is comfy but I had one abort on takeoff and have to go out of service.
Needless to say, they didn't have a backup aircraft and competing with 500+ other passengers to get re-booked was a trial.
I think it was Southern that ran them with single class 4 across seating instead of 5 across and matched the coach fares on the compeition. So there was a way to improve the quality of the flight.
It says a lot that even with that, there are a lot of people (myself included) who have a greater trust in Boeing than nearly any other passenger plane.
Everyone has preferences. I used to shudder when I saw my plane was going to be a DC-10.
I just had a bad feeling about those planes.
Like me with Airbust.
Still remember watching one of them orbiting around LAX with the unretractable nose gear jammed sideways. Something about a French airplane bothers me.
It's probably the excess garlic and onion.
Boeing did this to themselves - they are no longer considered "Best in Class" with any model, and COVID-19 might have just made their new 777-X obsolete - unless Emirates decides to replace all of their A380s with it.
Nobody can really say "If it ain't Boeing, I ain't going" any more. Just say "I ain't going" - because increasingly, if you must go, it will be an Airbus (made in Alabama) operating your flight.
Boeing had a nifty safety record until their pursuit of “equality” (Negative discrimination) instead of quality (Positive discrimination) of their entire workforce.
I cannot fathom the dread when one finds out that their passenger plane is one having a shoddy safety record especially when we had a time where we seemed to have had crashes fairly often.
I love the MD 90s. Always sat on the left side. Two seats. And behind the emergency exit. Lots of legroom. Like first class.
I would have thought the opposite would happen and that due to Covid-19 the airliners would have used the larger aircraft such as the 777 and 747 to help with social distancing. I always book my flights with Boeing no matter what airline.
Terminally stupid businesses:
1. Airliner manufacturers (Boeing, Airbus)
2. Airlines (let’s treat our customers like dirt)
3. Retail brick and mortar (JC Penney, Sears, etc)
4. Fake news ( not only are we annoying and generally stupid, we wouldn’t have a reason to get out of bed in the morning if we didn’t have anything to lie about)
how much does a used 777 sell for
these days?
