Drug Combo of Hydroxychloroquine with Zinc and Azithromycin Promising for Covid-19: NYU Study
Spectrum News NY1 ^ | 05/12/2020 | BY ALYSSA PAOLICELLI

NEW YORK - Researchers at NYU's Grossman School of Medicine found patients given the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine along with zinc sulphate and the antibiotic azithromycin were 44 percent less likely to die from the coronavirus.

"Certainly we have very limited options as far as what we have seen work for this infection so anything that may work is very exciting," said Dr. Joseph Rahimian, Infectious Disease Specialist at NYU Langone Health.

The study looked at the records of 932 COVID-19 patients treated at local hospitals with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin.

More than 400 of them were also given 100 milligrams of zinc daily.

Researchers said the patients given zinc were one and a half times more likely to recover, decreasing their need for intensive care.

One theory is that hydroxychloroquine may aid a cell’s ability to absorb the zinc which has antiviral properties and responds to the infection.

"It sort of boosts the zinc activity which is one of the reasons we thought to look at zinc here and in this observational study we did see a difference suggesting that maybe that boosting activity of the hydroxychloroquine with the zinc helps the zinc to work better and lead to a benefit," Rahimian said.

Dr. Rahimian says patients in the more critical stages of infection did not fare as well.

And he cautioned that more research is needed - in particular a randomized controlled trial - to prove how and how well the drug combination works.

Meanwhile, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association on Monday found that treating patients only with hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, or both did not reduce hospital deaths.

The study by the State Health Department and the SUNY Albany School of Public Health involved 1,500 patients.

President Donald Trump has hailed hydroxychloroquine as a potential game changer. Governor Andrew Cuomo also was upbeat about the drug but late last month he revealed that the preliminary findings of the state study were a disappointment.

"Basically it was not seen as a positive. Not seen as a negative. And didn’t really have much of an effect on the recovery rate," Cuomo said.

Other studies of hydroxychloroquine are continuing.

Dr. Rahimian says patients in the more critical stages of infection did not fare as well.

Thats consistent with other studies. The East Virginia Medical School protocol says to administer HCQ, Az, and Zinc immediately upon admission to the hospital. If symptoms worsen, add IV Vit C. Later, in ICU, administer Remdesivir.

one paper by the french cited it as having shown invitro anti-covid properties.

as others here have also said, it’s anti-inflamatory properties are important too. cytokine storm is something to be avoided.

some say HCQ acts to help zinc attack the virus (ionophore). i’m not so sanguine on that effect, it was mentioned as a possibility in one zinc anti-viral roundup paper i read (one study supporting that). in any event, free zinc, is a proven anti-viral all on it’s own. it kills this kind of virus if it can be kept free from it’s metalathions. vit-c always good as the great Linus Pauling said. vit-d also good, too, from what i’ve seen here.

in any case the bio-science i’ve read is solid on HCQ. it blocks ACE2 which blocks the virus.

Haven’t heard much about it in a couple days.Super expensive and you have to be hospitalized for several days since it is administered intravenously.

Quercetin is also a bio Ophir, though less effective in small dosages than Hydroxychloroquine. But you can get Quercetin OTC.

I have been taking zinc, Quercetin, C, D and a good multivitamin throughout this situation, so I am not too worried about getting the China virus, even at age 59.

I don’t live in Birmingham, but our town is in the Birmingham TV market.

The local news has been promoting Remdesivir because the University of Alabama-Birmingham Med School was involved in its development. Their propaganda is annoying.

I don’t care where Remdesivir was developed. I don’t expect to get the virus, but if I do, give me the Hydroxychloroquine cocktail.

as SeekandFind says - infection

There’s two different kinds of infections, viral and bacterial. Some antibiotics fight off one type better than the other. Hydroxychloroquine is an anti-viral which is different than antibiotic. “Unlike most antibiotics, antiviral drugs do not destroy their target pathogen; instead they inhibit their development.” Zinc allows your cells to better absorb the hydroxychloroquine.

We have that Orthodox Jewish Dr from NY to thank for this awesome treatment.

We have TDS to thank for it’s lack of usage or improper usage, ie, without zinc.

It’s funny; my wife and I are sick right now. Either a nasty cold or mild flu but it’s mainly sinus, lots of sneezing which are not signs of covid. She went to the Dr yesterday and ended up getting prescribed azithromycin. I don’t know what to think about that.

It appears that a “cure” has been found, but because President Trump mentioned it...it has been discarded.

What kind of Medical help are we accepting as the “best.”

If Fouci is an example...the questionable kind.

HCL is hydrochloric acid.

And imagine if this same treatment was provided EARLY IN THE DIAGNOSIS?!?!?!?!? 92% effective!!!!

The problem is that if you monitor patients you receive "early in the diagnosis", more than 92% recover with no treatment.

A Z-pack is a broad spectrum anti-biotic with some slight anti-viral effects. If you don't know what is wrong with someone, this is what you get. It will stop any opportunistic bacterial infections that may be occurring. By itself a z-pack likely won't do anything to Covid-19, although I don't believe anyone has studied it vs standard of care. The bottom line is it definitely won't hurt anything unless there is an underlying allergy, so why not?

Is Cuomo still ordering that Trump pills can only be administered in a hospital setting, anyone know?

Spectrum News NY1 certainly has a firm grasp on the obvious. The facts stated in the headlines have been ‘Known Science’ for at least a couple of months, now.

today in Fauxci’s Senate testimony he walked back some of his previously exuberance for Remdesivir.

Plus liver damage and organ failure can be a side effect for the above.

But Lord save us from the danger of loose stool for a couple of days if we take the Trump Pills for 5 days.

Seems like I read here of one or two bark extracts that might be used as a substitute for hcq but I don’t remember the name(s).
