NEW YORK - Researchers at NYU's Grossman School of Medicine found patients given the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine along with zinc sulphate and the antibiotic azithromycin were 44 percent less likely to die from the coronavirus.
"Certainly we have very limited options as far as what we have seen work for this infection so anything that may work is very exciting," said Dr. Joseph Rahimian, Infectious Disease Specialist at NYU Langone Health.
The study looked at the records of 932 COVID-19 patients treated at local hospitals with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin.
More than 400 of them were also given 100 milligrams of zinc daily.
Researchers said the patients given zinc were one and a half times more likely to recover, decreasing their need for intensive care.
One theory is that hydroxychloroquine may aid a cell’s ability to absorb the zinc which has antiviral properties and responds to the infection.
"It sort of boosts the zinc activity which is one of the reasons we thought to look at zinc here and in this observational study we did see a difference suggesting that maybe that boosting activity of the hydroxychloroquine with the zinc helps the zinc to work better and lead to a benefit," Rahimian said.
Dr. Rahimian says patients in the more critical stages of infection did not fare as well.
And he cautioned that more research is needed - in particular a randomized controlled trial - to prove how and how well the drug combination works.
Meanwhile, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association on Monday found that treating patients only with hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, or both did not reduce hospital deaths.
The study by the State Health Department and the SUNY Albany School of Public Health involved 1,500 patients.
President Donald Trump has hailed hydroxychloroquine as a potential game changer. Governor Andrew Cuomo also was upbeat about the drug but late last month he revealed that the preliminary findings of the state study were a disappointment.
"Basically it was not seen as a positive. Not seen as a negative. And didn’t really have much of an effect on the recovery rate," Cuomo said.
Other studies of hydroxychloroquine are continuing.

What exactly does azithromycin do besides act as an anti-inflammatory?
Zinc is the big differential in the HCQ therapy.
But people have reported favorable results with HCQ and Zpac.
It’s zinc which makes the big difference as the addition.
Interestingly, today in Fauxci’s Senate testimony he walked back some of his previously exuberance for Remdesivir. Something tells, me this newly developed and subsequently very expensive drug isn’t panning out to be the Fauxci Miracle Drug he was hoping it would be while downplaying HCQ/Z-Pack/Zinc at his every opportunity.

It is used to fight possible infections (e.g. bacterial infections ).
It also has some antiviral effects.

New drugs are heralded when they are 20% effective on cancer patients. But the best odds are when drugs are used in combination. The zinc does the actual disruption of virus inside the lung cell, it’s the HCL that lets it in.
Blood on MSM hands. Likely at least one person died because of MSM ridiculing anyone who dared try it, even to point of driving Democrat Governors to threaten licenses of Doctors and/or pharmacists who allowed its use.

Then way down at bottom of article it is revealed they only tested severely ill people- likely when it was way too late- and at beginning of article they do mention they only used HCQ and antibiotic- NO Zinc

This is such nonsense- they NEVER cite how many people have died taking HCQ- They treat ‘potential side effects’ as though taking the medicine is a death sentence-

Better late than never. And a conclusion coming from a prestigious university like NYU only helps bolster the case for the HQC+ZPack+Zinc combo.
once again- they do a BS study of HCQ with antibiotic only- no zinc, on severely sick people, likely those who are so close to death no drug will work on them, and then declare the ‘dangerous drug HCQ has ‘no benefit’ and the media swallows the story hook line and sinker-
And here this thread shows proof positive that given early, with zinc- it keeps people from dying-
I wish Fox would do some research and find out how many people actually died because of HCQ causing heart problems- find out how long the people took it- and what their heart conditions were before taking it- I can’t find any cases of people dying from it- but the msm tells us ‘how dangerous it is’
