Fauci in quarantine as Trump projects confidence and urges states to reopen
...Fauci, 79, a calming face of the Trump administrations otherwise chaotic pandemic response, has begun what is being described as modified quarantine, involving some work from home, after he had low risk contact with a White House staffer who tested positive.
He is joined by Dr Stephen Hahn, commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration, and Dr Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who have both gone into two weeks of isolation.

TENNESSEE or VIRGINIA - depending
You can get your hair cut on one side of the road but not the other: How one street that divides Tennessee and Virginia leaves residents grappling with how different lockdown rules are within 50 yards
...The town of Bristol has different lockdown restrictions depending on what side of State Street a person is on.
For example, on the Bristol, Tennessee, side of State Street people have already started dining inside restaurants after the state reopened most of its businesses on April 27.
Meanwhile, on the Bristol, Virginia, side of State Street, restaurants aren’t allowed to accept customers for dine-in options.

Bosnia:
imported ventilators from China useless for COVID-19
...after a public outcry over why the company, called Silver Raspberry and with ties to Bosnia’s political establishment, received the lucrative deal, the state prosecutor office opened an investigation into possible corruption and fraud.
In their initial report, the prosecutors said in a statement on Monday that the imported ventilators do not meet even a minimum of necessary characteristics for adequate treatment of coronavirus patients...

CHINA
As U.S. meat workers fall sick and supplies dwindle, exports to China soar
...Meat buyers in China ramped up imports from around the world as a pig disease decimated its herd, the worlds largest, and pushed Chinese pork prices to record highs. The supply shock drove China to pay more for U.S. meat than other countries, and even U.S. consumers, since late 2019...
...Processors including Smithfield Foods, owned by Chinas WH Group Ltd, Brazilian-owned JBS USA and Tyson Foods Inc temporarily closed about 20 U.S. meat plants as the virus infected thousands of employees...
...Smithfield, which Chinas WH Group bought for $4.7 billion in 2013, was the biggest U.S. exporter to China from January to March, according to Panjiva, a division of S&P Global Market Intelligence. Smithfield shipped at least 13,680 tonnes by sea in March, Panjiva said, citing its most recent data. ..
JAPAN
In Japan’s elder-care homes, coronavirus tests limits of overstretched staff
...About 28% of Japanese are over 65 and the country has long struggled to staff elder homes. The coronavirus means more care workers are self-quarantining or staying home to take care of their own children, and has kept foreign workers out of Japan.
Nearly a dozen home managers, elder care providers and carers told Reuters cutbacks in services and staff made them busier in every way. Yoshimu said she can clock 10 hours of weekly overtime, and more than once found residents stealing each others food.
The caregiver industry is barely hanging on...

Dr. Roger Seheult
Coronavirus Pandemic Update 69: “NAC” Supplementation and COVID-19 (N-Acetylcysteine)
N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is an over the counter supplement that has been utilized by clinicians for years to treat acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose, as a mucolytic, and for other medical problems. There is compelling research that NAC may also reduce the severity of viral infections like influenza, and perhaps reduce the risk of blood clots (thromboembolism) as well. Could NAC be effective in COVID-19? Dr. Seheult illustrates these ideas and discusses the peer-reviewed data involved.

CHILDREN
* One in four children with severe COVID-19 develops organ failure, study finds (Texas Children’s Hospital, Houston)
* There also is the question of what role, if any, children play in spreading the new coronavirus. A study published last week by researchers in Germany found that infected children carry the same amount of the virus as adults, which indicates they might be as infectious.
40 of the Houston children had underlying conditions
German study:
” Analysis of variance of viral loads in patients of different age categories found no significant difference between any pair of age categories including children. In particular, these data indicate that viral loads in the very young do not differ significantly from those of adults. Based on these results, we have to caution against an unlimited re-opening of schools and kindergartens in the present situation. Children may be as infectious as adults.”

Will be seeing more of this, rightly or wrongly. I think much of this comes down to people's distrust of government and also how government has conducted COVID-19 mitigation efforts.
Can’t Trump order governments to open businesses with more than half of their traffic from out-of-state (Commerce Clause)? That would basically get most of Bristol, VA wide open. JMO.
Yes, but let's just keep going with Fauci's beloved Big Pharma randomized trials, rather than giving more docs access to off-the-shelf anti-inflammatories, anti-coagulants and HCQ. /sarc
can hardly blame them tho. Shasta Co., 32 cases in 3 months?
Virus update: West Wing masks required; pro baseball could start in July (5/11/20)
Watch Now: Gov. Kristi Noem gives COVID-19 update 5/11/2020 (South Dakota)
Southern Hills Mall reopening Wednesday (Iowa, 5/11/20)
Travis County: Coronavirus deaths climb to 65; cases total 2,171 (Texas, 5/11/20)
Abbott orders testing of all nursing home residents and staffers (Texas, 5/11/20)
A good reason why targeted "lockdowns" made the most sense to me.
That and a loss of trust in government. Case in point - Governor Newson writing a letter projecting that over 56% of California residents would be infected with COVID-19 over the next eight weeks. Th letter is dated March 18.
- see https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8133181/California-governor-Gavin-Newsom-says-26-million-people-infected-coronavirus.html
(pulled the 56% figure directly from the image of the letter that Newsom sent to President Trump and not from the otherwise trashy DM).
that’d open a can of worms - Calif/Nevada/Ariz/NY/etal - all rely heavily on tourist dollars.
If Bristol, TN still has the same the kind of neighbors that existed 50 years ago, the good folk in TN would allow the good folk of VA to cross over State Street and set up a stall right next to their own storefront. And be glad of it since the stores don’t duplicate each other. The street being a state line as opposed to a border line. We’ll see what happens I guess.
Newsom is smoking something. One million tests, 69K cases, 2800 deaths (all rounded).
According to LA Times April 18, over 30% of LA County deaths were nursing homes and over 70% of the deaths in Long Beach have also been long-term/nursing homes.
Data released Friday, May 8, and also reported in the LA Times, showed that over 50% of California deaths have been nursing/rehab/long-term care homes.
With a current death count of 2778 (today’s worldometer), that would reduce statewide ‘community’ deaths to about 1400 over 4 months.
If Newsom had paid less attention to his daily tie color, and more attention to the vulnerable, and if county disaster preparedness plans weren’t a paper joke, a lot of those lost lives could have been saved.
It’s the people of California who’ve kept the death rate down. Not Newsom.
